POWER RANGERS to arrive in July 2016, first synopsis revealed

I don’t care how jaded or cynical you happen to be, but remembering a certain catchy guitar riff that was then followed by a weekly dose of a ridiculous gigantic monster getting seven shades of kaiju beaten out of it by teenagers with attitude was one hell of a way to spend an afternoon. I’ve still got a ton of love for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which I’m going to be shoring up for the next two years.

Because mark July 22 of 2016 in your calendar, because that’s when you’ll see the Power Rangers return to the big screen. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of decades, the Power Rangers is all about five teens recruited by Zordon, the mystical floating head protector of Earth, and charged with keeping an eye on the planet should any particularly nasty monsters show up.

With colourful outfits, martial arts and general expressions that border on an entire Step-Up dance routine when performing a mundane task such as making a cup of coffee. If that makes very little sense to you, here’s the official synopsis from Lionsgate and Saban, which isn’t currently on nostalgia drugs:

From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci (TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THOR) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.

Hell to the yeah. I like to think that our cinematic techniques for telling stories and kicking ass have evolved in the last decade or two, and seeing a quintet of teens battling planetary threats with some light-hearted attitude makes me smile. If this film could also bring back Bulk and Skull, I’d be heaven.

Look, I’m not one to judge anybody’s sexual preferences, but should you really be admitting that in public?

As Long as Jason David Frank and Amy Jo Johnson are in the film, even as Cameos, I can get behind this!
