There’s been talk about a sequel to late director Tony Scott’s 1986 classic for some time now, but most of that talk took place in the danger zone. As in, in danger of never actually happening. But you apparently just can’t keep a good franchise franchise as despite Scott’s unfortunate passing in 2012, Paramount once again announced late last year that they were going ahead with plans to tackle a sequel of the movie that made a star out of Tom Cruise, and probably a whole lot of money for Ray Ban.

And according to returning producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who spoke to Huffington Post about it, at least it seem as if they’ve used all this development time to come up with a core concept for the film.

“The concept is, basically, are the pilots [are] obsolete because of drones? Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay.”

Er, Stealth, anyone? Okay, so that may be an unfair comparison (especially since Stealth is now mostly just remembered for putting Jessica Biel in a tiny blue bikini), as we certainly don’t how this will play out in Top Gun 2. But I can’t help but get the feeling that a little more would be needed for a sequel of this stature. Especially since you’re going to have to make it worth Cruise’s while to return, seeing as how his plate is currently fuller than Darryn’s at a taco buffet.

“It’s just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he’s very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture.”

Cruise has already accepted the mission to shoot Mission: Impossible 5 next, and then he also has another Jack Reacher movie, Alex Kurtzmann and Roberto Orci’s Van Helsing spin, and the live-action anime adaptation Yukikaze in the pipeline. So yeah, the man is busy. But Bruckheimer and co have felt the need for speed to see this movie made, as too many people have worked on it thus far to just let it all just get shot down now.

“We’ve been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we’re getting closer and closer. Don [Simpson] and I tried to develop something, we didn’t succeed. [Tom] Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn’t succeed. Now we’re back at it.”

While I have my reservations about the story, I do hope they pull this off, even if it’s just so that we can get another epic soundtrack like the first one had. Hell, I’m probably going to spend the rest of the day listening to this classic over and over again at just the thought of it.
