When the first trailer for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children was released, I was definitely intrigued, even though the “young child with undiscovered powers is destined to save the world” plot seems like such a cliché. As it was pointed out by one of our readers though, it’s more like “Pride and Prejudice and X-Men”. Young kids hidden away in a secret mansion, learning to come to grips with powers that the world hates them for? Plus, bad guys with similar mystical powers out to destroy them? You might as well call it Miss Peregrine’s School for Gifted Youngsters.
Don’t let that dissuade you though. The children with super powers thing isn’t unique to X-Men, see for example Sky High, Chronicle, or most Young Adult movie adaptations. Plus, having Tim Burton at the helm means that Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is going to be darker, more gothic, and probably more stylish than we’d get out of your standard, run of the mill YA fair.
From visionary director Tim Burton, and based upon the best-selling novel, comes an unforgettable motion picture experience. When Jake discovers clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times, he uncovers a secret refuge known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, Jake realizes that safety is an illusion, and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. Jake must figure out who is real, who can be trusted, and who he really is.
On second thought, you know what? Seeing as this year’s actual X-Men movie was such a messy let-down, I’m kind of pinning my hopes on Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children to fill the gap left by Bryan Singer’s Meh-pocalypse. Maybe this is finally the superhero fantasy movie I’ve been waiting for!
Starring Eva Green as the titular Miss Peregrine, alongside Asa Butterfield, Dame Judi Dench, Ella Purnell, Allison Janney, Terence Stamp, Rupert Everett, Kim Dickens, and Samuel L. Jackson, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is scheduled for release on September 30, 2015.
