PSA: Your Witcher 3 save won’t be compatible with the GOTY version on consoles

Witcher3_2

The Witcher is getting a Game of the Year Edition – and rightly so. It, and the expansions that followed it are incredible, giving me some of my very favourite gaming experiences this generation. And very probably, some of yours.

The Game of the Year edition comes stuffed with every bit of extra content released to date; the cosmetic fluff DLC and the two excellent expansions: Hearts of Stone, and Blood and Wine. If you’ve not played the expansions, but want a complete package, it makes for a compelling reason to double dip and buy the game anew. If you were hoping to do that, and carry on from where you’ve left off though, there’s some bad news for console players.

Your Witcher 3 save file isn’t compatible with the Witcher 3 Game of the Year Edition. What that means is that if you’ve already invested dozens or even hundreds of hours of your time as Geralt, you’re probably better off just buying the DLC separately than buying the complete edition.

But…but why, you ask?

Says CD Projekt RED’s Marcin Momot:

“The save files on consoles won’t be compatible between different game versions (GOTY vs regular version) as they are treated by systems as separate products. This is something that’s not up to us. Sorry.”

Hopefully, the GOTY edition lets you use an already created and levelled character as the expansion pas did when they were released. Just in case you’ve lost your saves.

The Witcher 3’s Game of the Year Edition hits PC, Xbox One and PS4 on August 30.

Ugh. I cannot get into the Witcher 3. Sure I start the game, then get bored about two hours in and then leave it for months on end. When I do get back to it, I have to start from scratch.
Even if it is two different products, can the devs not do something to copy the saves from one product to the other? Save file import perhaps?

It sounds like its the console side that is the problem.
Steam would simply update the appID on their side.
Looks like consoles need an entire new product :/

This is CDProjektRed. I honestly believe that if they could, they would.

I get the same, but after a longer period.

I still have not finished the game. Am really close. And do not care. I will replay later this year, all expansions AND start from scratch again. I will play for two weeks, not every night, and then need a break again. It is fun, but I need those breaks. Happened with Witcher 3, DA:I. Not with Fallout 4. I played that for like 3 months straight.

I played Skyrim for months, the Sims 4 non stop since November last year. Fallout I get into for an hour or two at most, then I am left cold. DA: I I still have to give a good go.
I guess I am the reason that gamers hate gaming now. I loved the dumbed down Skyrim, and the Sims with less EP’s and easier gameplay.

As I get older, I need easier game-play, less learning curve, more accessibility. New strategy games, which I love, are out. How can I learn how to play them properly, managing a demanding job, two kids now, house stuff and all that? So, I have stopped buying them. It is sad to see a game in Steam with such few hours played, wasted money.

for sure. But as for Witcher 3, as I had played 1 and 2 several times through, I was also driven by a need to explore the beloved characters, further, Triss and so on, from the first two games. I loved that.

I am in the same boat as you, minus the two kids.

So good luck with that! 🙂

Well, +- 3 years ago, I played games most nights. Wife in bed by 21:00, I could play till midnight, sleep, up early for work and go for it. Now, two kids and wife quit main job: Wife in bed 22:00 or later, as she no longer has to get up to go to work, the kids and Unisa Online (limited hours per month) are her work. And that has cut into my gaming time a lot. No complaining, that is the way of the world, but it means I need to be more selective with what I play.

AND when, so, replaying Dragon Age:I now. Certain parts, the talking and stuff, do with toddler awake and wondering around (as long as not talking to “alien” or scary looking people), no problem. Even most of the fights, nothing scary looking on screen. So I have been playing Saturday mornings, when toddler and I get up early and wife sleeps in (especially NOW with newborn). That is nice,

Yeah. 5am on a Saturday morning is when I get my game on. It sounds silly, but I love the pre-dawn quiet, a nice cup of coffee and just me and the game I decided to play.

Wonder about that patch though, hopefully they integrate Blood and Wine more into the main game, did not fit when i started Blood and Wine before the Isle of Mists and Geralt tells Regis they defeated the wild hunt, was like no you didnt…yet.
