You know why there was such a boom in the pitchforks and torches industry when it was recently revealed that Quentin Tarantino would no longer be making his western The Hateful Eight (though he has since reneged on this), after a draft of the script got leaked online? It’s because we had already seen what the Oscar winning director could do in the western genre with Django Unchained, and it was masterful.

Django Unchained is arguably the best thing Tarantino’s ever done and any opportunity for the famous writer-director to play with those toys again, should get most film fans excited. And excited they should be, because while it’s still not 100% clear if Hateful Eight will ever seen the big screen, we may just be getting some Django on the small screen.

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival  over the weekend (via USA Today), Tarantino revealed that there is a surplus of footage that he shot for Django, which he is considering adding to the feature film version for a 4-hour long mini-series cut.

“I have about 90 minutes worth of material with Django. It hasn’t been seen. My idea, frankly, is to cut together a four-hour version of Django Unchained… But I wouldn’t show it like a four hour movie. I would cut it up into hour chapters. Like a four-part miniseries. And show it on cable television. Show it like an hour at a time, each chapter. We’d use all the material I have and it wouldn’t be an endurance test. It would be a mini-series. And people love those.”

Now Tarantino isn’t being 100% truthful when he says that these scenes have never been seen, as the director has adapted his original screenplay into a graphic novel which already incorporated this cut material (a lot of it revolving around Kerry Washington’s Broomhilda, the love of Jamie Foxx’s Django). I haven’t read it myself, but have heard favourable things, which means with some good editing for pacing, this could definitely work in a mini-series format.

It’s probably pertinent to mention at this point that Quentin Tarantino is a man who has a habit of vocalizing ideas about future projects that don’t necessarily come to fruition (The Vega Brothers, come on down!). That being said though, I’m such a huge Django fan that even just the prospect of more certainly seems like nothing other than a good idea.

Whether or not Django the TV Series becomes a reality, it will probably happen after Hateful Eight, which Tarantino is currently trying to work out a new draft for, with the intention of perhaps starting production some time next year. Well, that’s unless he has another idea about some other movie/TV series he wants to make.
