The Raid remake is back on with director Joe Carnahan confirmed

All the way back in 2014 actor Frank Grillo got involved in the remake no one asked for  – and it looked like it may happen. However, with directors and production houses dropping like swat team members it remained in limbo. That has finally changed. Director Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) has now confirmed via Twitter he will direct the remake with Grillo replacing Iko Uwais as the rookie cop Ramen. Only with this being an American movie maybe he’ll be called John, or Donald…

The 2011 Indonesian cult hit, directed by Gareth Evans, took action to such a level that most walked away from the film feeling like they had been Chuck Norris’ed to the head. The only Hollywood movie I can put on a par with it is John Wick so it’s no surprising that the west has been wanting to make its own version for a few years now.

I don’t think we need a remake here, much like we didn’t need a remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The Raid is not some deep, existential investigation of the human spirit that needs to be contextualized for another audience to appreciate.

It’s about breaking bones and shooting the crap out of people while doing back flips. The only justifiable reason I can think we need this remake is for people who can’t read subtitles. Also, and no disrespect to Carnahan, I am not sure he is the best choice of director. The A-Team remake was a bloody abomination with some of the dumbest actions sequences to date and the Grey was middling at best so how he will manage to capture the spirit of The Raid is beyond me. But maybe he will surprise us.

Maybe it will work if they make it an all female cast. Worked for Ghostbusters.

The Raid doesn’t need a remake.

The movie is perfect as it.

    Hands off …
