Five of the most loathsome characters on TV are set to create history with their antics in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. News from Deadline is that Dennis, Sweet Dee, Charlie, Mac and Frank, who have just finished their 11th season, have been picked up for not one, not two, but three more seasons and that makes my life happier! Watching their depravity has shown me that people like Trevor are not alone, knowledge that somehow lets me rest easier at night. The only other live-action comedy that lasted this long was way back in 1952 with The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, a show I admittedly have no clue about but am sure James does. It just goes to show that having miscreants who run an Irish pub and go off on stupid, selfish adventures, usually at the expense of other members of their crew, has major appeal.

The show moves from parent channel FX to their newly-formed sister-channel FXX who have ordered the new seasons. I remember sitting down to the first season and crying with laughter as co-creators Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton did some really bad things to a priest (oh poor Cricket) and squared off against the likes of the McPoyles; beings almost as bad as the main characters. Later on Danny DeVito, who plays troll-like Frank (because he literally acts like one, looks like one, and eats like one) joined the team adding a rather well known name to a very unknown team. In fact they pitched their first ideas to FX on video camera, take that Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justifying Accounts.

Nick Grad, co-President of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions had this to say about three more years of craziness:

If anyone doubts the power of a camcorder and a dream, just look at It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which was a DIY backyard pilot when Rob, Charlie and Glenn brought it to FX and will go down in TV history as one of the most loved and enduring comedies. Few shows make it this far or have such devoted fans, and we owe it all to the creative vision and great humor of the creators and cast who keep Sunny fresh and inventive every season.

That makes me so damn happy. Many shows that don’t deserve the axe get cut and others that have run their course (I’m looking at you Walking Dead) continue so it’s nice to see something that is rather out fringe hang in there. Now I’m off for a pint at Paddies!
