I’m getting older, so my memory is starting to fuzzy, but I vaguely recall an incident of Adam Sandler actually being funny. It’s a very distant memory though, which must have happened a hell of a long time ago, as I had to navigate pass “little scratchable stars in Scope magazine” to get there.

As if Jack and Jill wasn’t torture enough (it’s overtaken waterboarding on the latest Fave Terrorist Interrogation Tools rankings), he now brings his full obnoxious powers to bear on what actually looks it could be a really funny movie. Without him, that is.

Playing an obnoxious character up for laughs is a slippery slope. You need to be very careful that you don’t become so overbearingly irritating that you slip off into Jar Jar Binks territory. Judging by this trailer though, it looks like Sandler’s membership card to the Naboo Honarary Gungan Club just arrived in the mail.

Which is a pity, as the rest of the film actually looks pretty funny. It’s directed by John Morris and Sean Anders – the guys who did Hot Tub Machine –  and written by David Wain and Ken Marino – the scribes behind Role Models, The Ten and Wanderlust. It even c-ostars Andy Samberg, arguably the funniest man currently on the Saturday Night Live roster. And yet, even with all of those comedy credentials,I couldn’t help but cringe every time Sandler opened his mouth.

Speaking of cringing, this is a Red Band trailer, so I expected some NSFW language and content, but nothing prepared me for 0:42. I’ve lived a good life up until now, I’m faithful to my wife and I pay my taxes. I didn’t do anything to deserve that.

While still in his teens, Donny (Adam Sandler) fathered a son, Todd (Andy Samberg), and raised him as a single parent up until Todd’s 18th birthday. Now, after not seeing each other for years, Todd’s world comes crashing down on the eve of his wedding when an uninvited Donny suddenly shows up. Trying desperately to reconnect with his son, Donny is now forced to deal with the repercussions of his bad parenting skills.

Here’s hoping that the rest of the cast and material can overcome Sandler’s rapid downward spiral in unfunny-dom.
