Yesterday we heard the big news that Avengers: Age of Ultron would be shot here in good ol’ South Africa, and for actor Samuel L. Jackson, this is going to be like deja vu. Not only because he always seems to be visiting our country, but he just recently finished shooting another adaptation here in Johannesburg: Kite. Produced by Anant Singh and helmed by local director Ralph Ziman (Jerusalema) it adapts Yasuomi Umetsu’s cult classic anime movie A Kite. And here’s Mr. Jackson to introduce the film’s first trailer as well as clips from it.

Kite is a character-driven action film that charts the story of Sawa, portrayed by India Eisley, a young woman living in a failed state, post-financial collapse, where the corrupt security force profits on the trafficking of young women. When her father, a cop, is killed, Sawa vows to track the murderer down with the help of her father’s ex-partner, Karl Aker as played by Samuel L. Jackson.

Despite my love of anime, I’ve never seen the original film, so I can’t tell how this holds up in comparison. I do know however that the original boasted some really high levels of sex and violence, and it’s cool to see that Ziman isn’t holding back on that regard (well, at least on the violence front). That being said, I’m not completely sold on this film yet, something just feels slightly… off to me (maybe the bland action choreography), though I will admit that it certainly show tons of promise, especially in young star India Eisley and with some of the nice visual touches that Ziman brings.

Kite stars Samuel L. Jackson, India Eisley, Callan McAuliffe, Cleo Rinkwest, Russel Savadier, Keci Eatock, Matthew Van Leeve and Jaco Muller. It doesn’t have a release date yet.

A live action Noir would be better, but please, not done by Hollywood.
