Richard E Grant to guest star in Doctor Who Christmas special

If there is one thing that Doctor Who manages to pull off brilliantly every year, it’s a decent Christmas special. Except for last year, which was so sugary sweet in Christmas cheer, that it gave me television diabetes. This year might be different however, because the special will be attracting some top notch talent, as Richard E Grant is joining the cast for the Yuletide TV Movie.

Grant happens to be no stranger to the Doc Who franchise, as he played a quasi-official Doctor, or voiced him and provided the look for his animated screen version, in Scream of the Shalka, and who could forget his brief turn as the Time Lord in the charity special, The Curse of the Fatal Death.

There’s no word yet on which character the actor will play, although that British bastion of journalism with integrity (/sarcasm), The Sun, has hinted that he’ll be the villain this time around.

Filming starts this week, with Saul Metzstein directing.

I missed last year’s Christmas Special, the one before that (A Christmas Carol) was pretty saccharine as well. Good story, but the ending was just too… “tralala we all learned a valuable lesson and it’s so wonderful”. But that’s just my opinion, if The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe was the same then I’m okay with missing it.

But, Richard E. Grant? That might make things more interesting…

I loved last year’s special, but then again when it comes to all things Doctor Who related I am massively biased, so I don’t think my opinion should really count for much.

I’ve got to be honest, last year’s special had so much Christmas cheer shoved down my throat, I felt like converting to the Rasta lifestyle. But the 2010 one, with Michael Gambon? That was superb, and a great twist on an old tale.
