Rob Zombie has his eyes wide shut in this teaser for THE LORDS OF SALEM

I kinda dig the films that Rob Zombie has created in recent years. But that admiration is more reserved for a technical and visual level than anything else. While the man knows how to nail some scary moments and amp an atmosphere, he hasn’t exactly produced stuff that deserves an Oscar for best story or script.

Can he change that trend with his latest long in development project, The Lords of Salem. Not according to some cheesy chanting and an over-reliance on Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut style of film school, in this new teaser.

Heidi, a radio station DJ, receives a wooden box containing a record. Heidi listens and the bizarre sounds within the grooves immediately trigger flashbacks of Salem’s violent past. Is Heidi going mad or are the Lords of Salem returning for revenge on modern day Salem?

I’ll say one about The Lords of Salem, and that’s that it looks like Zombie on overkill, as he seems to have crafted one massively intertwined tribute to horror, even roping in a few iconic genre actors such as Dee Wallace and Barbara Crampton into the flick.

The Lords of Salem stars Sheri Moon Zombie, Bruce Davison, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Ken Foree, Patricia Quinn, and Judy Geeson, and is due for a release some time next year.

An Oscar is not that big a deal. Many great directors have made entire careers without a nod from the Academy.

I dig Zombie’s stuff, though I do hope this is much closer to Devil’s Rejects than 1000 Corpses. The trailer really evokes classic Seventies horrors – stuff like Rosemary’s Baby and The Wicker Man.
