Robert Downey Jr talks CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Captain America! Iron Man! Reunited, and it feels so good! Except the opposite, as the two Avengers are going to find out that some disagreements can’t be solved by talking. Sometimes, you need to negotiate with a Vibranium shield being slung into the armoured face of a billionaire genius playboy philanthropist. That’s the setup of Captain America: Civil War, as Steve Rogers and Tony Stark find their ideologies clashing in a war that involves the superhero community. And even though Robert Downey Jr’’ is undeniably the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this will still be a Steve Rogers movie.

That’s according to Downey Jr, as he stressed to Empire that Captain America 3 would still focus on the good Captain:

Ultimately it’s Steve’s story; it doesn’t say ‘Iron Man 4: Civil War’. I think that’s great too.

And that’s a role that will require Chris Evans to dig deeper into his character, according to Downey Jr:

I think Chris [Evans] has been hungry to bring even more of an underside and some shadow to that. I remember the comics – on the surface you got the sense that Cap was baseball and apple pie, but underneath there was all this churning stuff of being a man out of time. Now we know he’s made his peace with that. What’s the bigger issue? It can have a little something to do with the past, but it can be about someone becoming more modernised in their own conflict.

As for Tony and his government-aligned loyalty to policing the superhero community in Civil War, Downey Jr explained that the shellhead wouldn’t be a villain exactly, with clues popping up to the upcoming conflict being planted in Avengers: Age Of Ultron:

The clues are in Ultron about where we might find [Stark] next, but what would it take for Tony to completely turn around everything he’s stood for, quote-unquote, because he was the right-wing guy who could still do his own thing. The idea of Tony being able to march into Washington and say, ‘I’ll sign up’, wouldn’t have made sense if the political climate in the real world hadn’t shifted the way it has. It’s a little bit of things following a real world continuum in, ‘What would you do?’ You have to figure, ‘Were you to ask the question, what would the American government do if this were real? Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Tony doing something you wouldn’t imagine?’

Production on Captain America: Civil War kicks off later this year in the US spring, with Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo returning.

  1. Seriously looking forward to this! Captain America: Winter Soldier may very well be my favourite Marvel movie of all time so far (yes, even above the original Iron Man, Avengers and GotG!!), so I’m really keen to see where they take the story. Hoping they integrate the search for Bucky into the storyline too.

I have to agree with you here. The action sequences were so good (especially the knife fight between Bucky and Cap) and the story was solid. So excited
