Freddy (1)

One, two, Freddy’s coming for you… Every horror icon has some kind of sonic tagline, but Freddy Krueger’s twisted nursery rhyme is certainly one of the most memorable. Nightmare on Elm Street is a juggernaut of the genre and still remains a strong icon, partially thanks to his resurgence in Freddy vs Jason.

But that was 12 years ago and we’ve not seen much of Freddy since. Five years ago a remake failed to ignite the franchise again. Though some, including me, thought the general execution lacked a lot in terms of creativity and fresh ideas, many believe the real failure was not having Robert Englund onboard to repeat his best-known role.

Well, good news: Englund is all up for a sequel, maybe even a fight with Halloween‘s Mike Myers, speaking to fans at Comicon:

“You don’t do remakes! I would do ‘Freddy 9’, you know? Or I would do ‘Freddy vs Michael Myers’. Or I would do a prequel.”

But don’t get too excited: Englund was mainly musing about what could be done, not what is happening. He’s really just shooting the breeze with fans. Another suggestion was not having him play Freddy at all, but a gear change to a whole new audience:

“Well, I’d like to see ‘Nightmare in the Hood’! I would! I think it’d be really interesting to do a line of, like, retro 80’s hip hop ones and get a black actor to play “Freddy” and all the kids are, like, hip hop. Just do it the same!”

So, no, there isn’t a Freddy vs. Mike movie in the works, just Englund’s opinion on the idea. But the good news is that if a Nightmare sequel or spin-off comes around, he would be keen to slip on his bladed glove again.
