Robopocalypse recruits a murderer!

I have to admit, I don’t know much about the upcoming Steven Spielberg sci-fi film Robopocalypse, but since reading the casting news and the official synopsis you can colour me impressed. The casting news I am referring to, of course, is the addition of Ben Wishaw to an already star-heavy feature.

Wishaw will be playing a character called Lurker, an expert hacker. Now, there isn’t much more detail to it than that, so that  bodes the question. What exactly will young master Lurker be hacking? Will be hacking into the systems the robots are using to try and disrupt them? I find it far more likely that he will be trying to hack into Catwoman’s iPhone. Yep, that’s right – the film also stars the beautiful Anne Hatheway. Chris “Thor” Hemsworth is also lending his talents to the film and already you can tell that this is going to be an epic film. Hemsworth has, so far, done no wrong so I have a suspicion that this will be another notch on his belt (or hammer?) of success.

Wishaw joining the team is very exciting as well, as I’ve always felt him to be quite underrated. For those of you familiar with Perfume: Story of a Murderer you will be quite aware that he is capable of turning in a stellar performance. We will also see him soon in Cloud Atlas and Skyfall, so I have a sneaking suspicion that he will be much more of a household name a year from now, or less.

Here is the official synopsis for  the Daniel. H. Wilson novel the film will be adapting:

Not far into our future, the dazzling technology that runs our world turns against us. Controlled by a childlike—yet massively powerful—artificial intelligence known as Archos, the global network of machines on which our world has grown dependent suddenly becomes an implacable, deadly foe. At Zero Hour—the moment the robots attack—the human race is almost annihilated, but as its scattered remnants regroup, humanity for the first time unites in a determined effort to fight back. This is the oral history of that conflict, told by an international cast of survivors who experienced this long and bloody confrontation with the machines. Brilliantly conceived and amazingly detailed, “Robopocalypse” is an action-packed epic with chilling implications about the real technology that surrounds us.

That sounds extremely exciting! Great cast, great source material…dare I say I feel quite optimistic about this one?

He’s the guy from Perfume? Now I look at him in a totally different light… but I can’t say I’m all that excited about a new Spielberg movie.
