The Rock is taking on gravity in this full trailer for Skyscraper

This past Monday we got a gluttony of movie trailers coming our way thanks to the American obsession with the Super Bowl and it being the perfect time for studios to market their movies. One of those movies that we got a brief glimpse at was Dwayne Johnson’s new film Skyscraper. It was only a brief look at the movie, but enough to make you realise that the movie is more than just a silly idea or an excuse for The Rock to flex his muscles (though he does that anyway) and actually look like it held a decent story amidst all that potential action and death-defying jumps.

That was only a teaser though as now we have the full trailer for the movie out and it’s even better. This time around we get to see a little more about what makes Johnson’s character Will Sawyer tick and exactly why he is willing to go to such extreme lengths to want to climb tup a burning building and decide to do ridiculous leaps of faith in the process. It also gives us a better look into the futuristic building, which is pretty impressive and something which might seem sci-fi-ish for now, but is most certainly the direction the world is headed as we look to build taller and taller buildings.

Now I’ll be honest, the concept is still a little bare and burning buildings and family stories like this have all been done before, but I can’t help but feel the tension in this trailer. Maybe it reminds me a little of one of my favourite action movies of all time, Die Hard, but this time with more special effects and a touch of sci-fi thrown in.

Skyscraper is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurbers who worked with Johnson previously on Central Intelligence. And while that movie did allow the director to make his first foray into action, it still featured a lot of comedic moments in line with his previous works like We’re the Millers and Dodgeball: An Underdog Story. Skyscraper looks like it will be just a straight action movie this time around though. Still, if you want to make your first proper action film, I guess it doesn’t hurt to have a veteran and box office magnet like Johnson in to help attract audiences to your film.

Skyscraper is due for release this July and also stars Neve Campbell as Sawyer’s wife and a host of bad guys who are likely to all get their butts kicked.
