Rumour – Chris Columbus to return for GOONIES and GREMLINS sequels

If you were a child of the 1980’s or 1990’s criminally ancient SABC programming, then you most likely grew up watching Gremlins and The Goonies. Those are a pair of classic films which have one thing in common: Writer and Producer Chris Columbus. And it looks like Columbus is going back to his roots with a sequel planned for each of those films.

According to the Tracking Board, Warner Bros currently has the Gremlins sequel in a fast-track position with Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg producing. It’ll follow the same rules as the original films, about a young boy who receives a Mogwai as a gift and happens to neglect the very specific rules for its care. Naturally, mayhem and painful Gremlin hatching follows. While Chris Columbus – who penned the original’s screenplay – will produce once again, it looks like director Joe Dante is unlikely to return.

When asked about a new Gremlins movie a few years back, Columbus acknowledged that ”it would be fun to go back and revisit,” but he expressed some reservations.

I think it’s impossible to recreate in a CGI environment. I think it will inevitably lose some of its charm. Those are edgy Muppets in a sense and you don’t want to lose that sense of anarchy that those gremlins had, because behind the scenes are 25 puppeteers making them to come to life.

Moving on, Columbus will is rumoured to be teaming up with Steven Spielberg for The Goonies sequel, which does have Richard Donner attached to direct once again and hopefully reunite all the original stars. In the same interview, Columbus hinted that Goonies would be a tough act to follow as well:

But as Steven [Spielberg] said, ‘How can you really be going underground finding another gigantic pirate ship filled with treasure? What can be the next adventure?’

Columbus’ next project however, is a directing gig on the 1980s-inspired Pixels, an Adam Sandler comedy in which ’80s-style video game characters attack New York City. But more Goonies and Gremlins with Columbus helping to oversee the production? I’d feed Kervyn after midnight for that.
