Rumour: Fox considering swapping FANTASTIC FOUR 2 with DEADPOOL sequel in 2017

I think it’s safe to declare that Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot is a wreck. Critics have given it a fully deserved whipping (I got my licks in as well) and the film has been a total dud at the box office. This is clearly not what the studio was expecting though when they greenlit a planned sequel last year already. But with the movie somehow now turning out to be less successful commercially and critically than the terrible 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four films (seriously, who saw that coming?!), that plan is obviously in jeopardy. And according to a new rumour, the studio is looking to rewrite that plan with the help of a certain “Merc With the Mouth”.

TheDailySuperhero are reporting to have heard from an industry insider that Fox are now considering scrapping Fantastic Four 2 from its planned 9 June 2017 release date, and instead replacing it with a still-unannounced Deadpool sequel.

On first glance, this actually makes a ton of sense. Even before release, Fantastic Four was facing a massive uphill battle in the public eye, not just for it’s reboot direction, but also due to controversial (to some) casting choices, reports of director difficulties and studio meddling. In contrast, the Ryan Reynolds Deadpool has been nothing but a gigantic smashing success, with just about every image, plot detail and hilarious trailer being met with gigantic fanfare and approval ever since the long-gestating film finally went into official production earlier this year.

With Deadpool only set to be released in February 2016, we’re still a few months away from seeing if the full movie is actually as good as all the marketing has made it seem, but thus far it’s clearly poised to have a big opening thanks to all the love its received. If Fox does does indeed pull this switcheroo, it would beg two questions: 1) Can they actually do it in time? And 2) what would the movie be about?

As TheDailySuperhero points out, if Fox were to already start early development of Deadpool 2 as soon as the first film’s production wrapped in April – which is not unexpected based on the positive response – then that leaves more than enough time to finish principal photography and post-production next year.

And as for what the sequel could be about, Reynolds already stated that he would like to see popular X-Man Cable – who shared a comic book with Deadpool during arguably their most popular run – brought into a sequel. Director Tim Miller also reiterated this when he told Empire that “there aren’t really many definitive Deadpool villains, apart from Cable. If we don’t put Cable in Deadpool 2 I think we’ll be run out of town on a rail.” Birth.Movies.Death also claimed to have heard from sources that a Cable & Deadpool movie is in the works at Fox.

We already know that Fox has tapped Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) to develop a movie based on X-Force, the militaristic splinter team of the X-Men, led in the comics by none other than Cable. Perhaps a Cable & Deadpool movie would be the perfect way to introduce him to audiences before allowing him to lead his own film. Cable’s backstory is rather complex – he is the son of Cyclops and an evil clone of Jean Grey, who was raised by a weird cult in a dystopian alternate future timeline after being infected with a techno-organic virus, who then travels back in time to fight alongside his younger father – so he may just need multiple movies to get it all across. The fact that Deadpool is also a member of a newer incarnation of X-Force offers up even more crossover potential!

Of course, all of this is still wild speculation until Fox says something officially, and if this coming weekend’s international box office numbers look as dismal for Fantastic Four as the domestic ones do, then we may just be hearing something really soon.

Its as if Fox dont even watch their own movies, they just look at the numbers. I mean I know they gotta make money like all companies but is it too much to ask for them to try and enjoy movies once in a while? Maybe then they wont have to use the “Fling shit at the wall and see what sticks” strategy.

Haven’t watched the latest F4 but am disappointed it’s not a success… it had the cast to do well, the trailers seemed great and I was really looking forward to watching it… :/ Suppose the troubles started with that horrible name….

That said, having a Deadpool sequel in the works before the first is released shows Fox have faith in what the creative team are doing with it, but then how could they screw up (interfere with) F4 as some report? I mean… even with the X-Men films, with a proven director (Singer) and stellar cast they have only gone from strength to strength. Could all the troubles really be from studio meddling? hmm…
