Rumour: MAN OF STEEL 2 may be on "permanent hold"

So there’s good news and bad news. Good news? According to the folks over at Den Of Geek, the recent rumour that Mad Max: Fury Road‘s George Miller may be directing the still unscheduled Man of Steel 2 for Warner Bros really has some merit. However, according to their sources, the next Superman solo movie is merely one possible project for the acclaimed veteran director, as he and WB are actually still talking about which of their DC Comics properties he would like to tackle. It will all come down to which story grabs his interest and whether his schedule matches up with WB’s planned slate of DC Comics movies.

And now to the bad news. That aforementioned slate actually doesn’t mention Man of Steel 2 at all, only including Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, the Justice League two-parter, The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg and Green Lantern. However it’s been widely accepted that we would also see solo movies for both Batman and Superman, with rumblings already pegging Ben Affleck to both star in and direct The Batman in 2018, with another two Batman movies to come.

But up until the recent watercooler talk about Miller taking on Man of Steel 2, nothing has been said about seeing Henry Cavill’s Superman headline a movie by himself again. And that’s because it may not happen. Sort of. According to another of Den of Geek’s sources, the Man of Steel sequel has been placed on “permanent hold”, but your guess is as good as mine as to exactly what that means though.

It could imply that Warner Bros are still waiting to see how their current slate of DC Comics movies plays out before starting work on another Superman movie that could mark the beginning of a brand new slate of stories, sort of like Marvel’s Phases. It could also mean that with Cavill’s Superman already headlining two movies with another two to come in Zack Snyder’s Justice League – Part 1 & 2, that they may want to explore other properties before going back to the Kryptonian well.

Or – and this is my favourite of all the crazy, completely unsubstantiated ideas my brain cooked up – it may just be that they plan to kill off Superman in Justice League ala the famous “Death of Superman” story and give some other characters a chance to shine (maybe even introducing stand-ins like Steel and Superboy) before eventually bringing him back one day. Really, it’s anybody’s guess at this point, at least until Warner Bros decides to say something officially.

It started out as a MoS sequel, but then the story just kept growing. Now it’s more of a Justice League prequel, really.

The WBDC slate is already pretty full till about 2018, so if he does do a movie for them, there will be enough time to do the next Mad Max first.

Cool. Have to say that after the last Avengers movie, I can’t help but feel that the superhero thing is over. Not sure if DC will be able to revive it, but I felt we’ve reached a state of OD.

I actually don’t feel that way at all, and it’s especially thanks to Ant-Man. There are so many different stories still left to tell, and so many different ways to tell them. As long as they keep things fresh and really mix up the feel/genre, I’m all good.

At least that’s how I feel about Marvel. While I’m seriously excited for Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, my fear is that WBDC’s “everything is grim” approach will get tiresome real fast.

Of course we have no idea what Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Flash would be like. They could be completely different tonally, in which case there shouldn’t be a problem.

I’ve not seen Ant-Man yet. Maybe that will change my mind. Avengers was getting a little long in the tooth for me. I think that at least in that movie they reached a point of character over saturation. Personally I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the darker characters of Marvel on screen. Punisher and Ghostrider comes to mind. Hopefully Deadpool opens up the door for a more mature supe movies as well.

Yeah so I’m all superhero’ed out tbh but I am one of the 3 ppl on the planet that really enjoyed Man of Steel so this isn’t great news/rumor for me. The first movie, as flawed as it was, still had a fantastic cast who delivered probably the best Superman experience I have ever had.
