Star Wars rumours. They seem to pop with the regularity of Darryn having silly ideas, and if you follow him on social media, you would know that Darryn has a whole lot of those. Unfortunately for most of these Star Wars rumours, they seem to be the silliest of ideas themselves, but one has just popped up that makes quite a lot of sense.

We’ve been hearing about the Star Wars standalone films – the movies focusing on character/story elements outside of those featured in the main trilogy films – for some time now, but all we really know as fact thus far is that Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and Josh Trank (Chronicle and Fantastic Four) will be directing the first two, respectively, with an unknown number more waiting in the wings, as Disney/Lucasfilm plan to alternate their release with the main trilogy films to have a Star Wars movie in cinemas every year. With that many possible movies, they could potentially be focussing on just about anything, but the three subjects that seemingly pop up in conversations over and over again are Han Solo, Boba Fett and Yoda.

But there are problems with those suggestions: Seeing a young, possibly more kid-friendly or even kid Han Solo is not what lots of hardcore fans want to see, so too examining Boba Fett’s past might just strip him of the mystique that is arguably his most attractive feature. Also, kill myself I will, if a full movie with talking like this, I have to sit through.

But according to a report from MakingStarWars, another classic character has just entered the standalone movie fray: Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Obi-Wan Kenobi – I’ve heard from quite a few people now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works. For the spin-off movies they were initially going to stay away from any Jedi or Sith characters. But I’m hearing now that because of the popularity of Obi-Wan (fans recently voting for him on the official website etc) that an art team is now working with a writer on concepts for an Obi-Wan movie.

The vote they’re referring to is a recent “tournament” on StarWars.com, where the Jedi master was surprisingly voted as the most popular Star Wars character of all time. Yes, he beat out Vader and even Han Solo. This win could possibly be attributed to modern audiences love of Clone Wars, in which Kenobi plays a major role.

On top of that popularity, Lucasfilm already have the perfect casting in Ewan McGregor – whose turn as the younger Obi-Wan was arguably the best thing about the Prequel TrilogyMcGregor has even said on multiple occasions that he would be open to reprising the role if Lucasfilm just asked. He even gave his own suggestion for a story, saying that he’d love to do something between Episode III and IV, as not only is he the perfect age to play the character then, but it’s reasonably unexplored territory in the character’s timeline. Just what was Obi-Wan up to between the time of him filleting and braaing his old Padawan on Mustafar and him becoming an old man hiding out in a desert shack on Tatooine?

My idea? Keep it relatively small-scale, as the Jedi Master, just trying to stay under the radar, reluctantly gets involved in some kind of dispute, all the while trying his best to hide his Jedi abilities. And while that Yojimbo-styled story is going on, focus on exactly what he’s experiencing as he sees the Empire growing around him, led by the man that he trained and arguably helped turn into the monster that he’s become. Maybe have him go off planet – possibly even to make some grand gesture – but then end with him then rather coming back to Tatooine to watch over Luke. End credits. Print money.

And with that time frame, and by not letting the story get too big, it will allow the movie to crossover rather easily and craftily with Star Wars Rebels, as the two can just drop the occasional light reference to each other. I don’t know about you guys, but I would definitely watch the hell out of that.

    Oh. Hell. YES!!!

    A hundred times YES!!

Ewan McGregor reprising the role of an older Obi Wan would be utterly amazing if done well, and a movie like this coud be the perfect bridge between the three trilogies that will appeal to fans of all of them.
