Rumour: Vin Diesel may have had a "vision" about which Marvel character he would play

You may recall how two weeks ago it was reported that Vin “I gargle with” Diesel was contacted by Marvel for some unspecified super secret future project. At the time, Darryn was convinced that Diesel’s basso profondo throat pipes would be perfect for Guardians of the Galaxy’s gun-happy anthropomorphic animal, Rocket Raccoon, while I aimed my speculations a bit higher on the food chain, thinking he could be picked to play ultimate baddie, Thanos.

It seems we both may have been wrong. Maybe. Diesel took to his Facebook page again yesterday to report back on the meeting, posting the following image and message.

“Marvel meeting today. Only the people in the room can tell you what was discussed… P.s. Thanks to Our page, for pushing to make it happen… you know I get tunnel vision with my work… and after that meeting today… wow!”

Now while the classic Avengers comic cover behind Diesel features Giant-Man most prominently (its actually the issue in which he makes his debut), I doubt that would be the role he spoke to Marvel about. Giant-Man is one of the many costumed identities of super-scientist Hank Pym, aka Ant-Man, aka that other superhero that Edgar Wright is already making a movie about. And while I have no problem with filmmakers taking a little creative licence when casting for roles, picking Diesel to play Hank Pym would be like picking Justin Timberlake to play Thor.

So if not Pym, then who? Well, many many fans have already latched onto a single word in Diesel’s statement as a clue to his involvement: Vision. For those of you who don’t know, Vision is an android created by Ultron, the super-intelligent and super-evil AI (which, coincidentally, was created in turn by Hank Pym), using the brainwaves of a dead hero.

Vision_AvengersVision was created to fight against Pym and his friends, but would rebel against his maker’s megalomaniacal tendencies and eventually go on to become not only an Avenger himself, but also one of the most popular of all time. He – and let me remind you, he is a robot – would also become romantically involved with the Scarlet Witch, who has already been confirmed by Joss Whedon to be in The Avengers 2, and through her hex-powers the couple would have twin boys. Yes, she got preggers from knocking magical boots with a robot. Welcome to comics.

Now fans have been calling for Vision to make an appearance in the franchise for ages already and there’s still a popular theory that Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson – last seen contracting a mild case of death on the helicarrier in The Avengers, but now somehow suddenly back alive and kicking in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – will be revealed to be the fan favourite android.

But could it be that Diesel will actually be donning the collared yellow cape instead? With his stoic demeanour and bald head, he certainly does have a physical resemblance to the character, and his rumbling voice would be well suited for the android’s vocal patterns. Plus, lest we forget, Diesel already has some experience in playing robots.

Now, all of this is course the wildest of conjectures, since we’re all essentially extrapolating a story from a single word take out of context, but it does make sense in a sort of crazy way. As, I guess, all clutching-at-straws fanboy theories do.

  1. Vin Diesel as Vision? I’d like to not see that. Vin Diesel as Ultron though? Now we’re talking!

If he does play Vision, I wouldn’t be surprised he also takes on the (short) role of Wonder Man for some form of origin story. Somehow feel Vin would fit more with him than Vision, already has glowy eye’d acting down.
