Say what you like about the Daniel Craig era of James Bond, but it’s hard to refute the fact that the last decade has seen and heard some of the best 007 theme songs to date. What started with Chris Cornell’s “You Know My Name” in Casino Royale, continued with an upbeat tempo featuring Jack White and Alicia Key’s “Another Way To Die” in Quantum of Solace.

Finally, Adelle brought things full circle with the titular Skyfall theme, a tune reminiscent of the Shirley Bassey work done on Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever. That last track set a high bar, one that had a well-deserved Oscar award at the top.

Now, it’ll be up to Sam Smith to surpass it in SPECTRE. Sony and MGM have amazingly been able to keep a lid on just who would be performing the next Bond theme, as Sam Smith managed to write an record the song in secret. I have no idea who Smith is, as much like the AC/DC T-shirt that I wear 24/7, I’m stuck in 1985.

But according to a cursory glance, Smith “rose to fame in October 2012 when he was featured on Disclosure’s breakthrough single “Latch”, which peaked at number eleven on the UK Singles Chart.

He does need a proper haircut though.

His subsequent feature—on Naughty Boy’s “La La La”—earned him his first number one single in May 2013.

In December 2013, he was nominated for the 2014 BRIT Critics’ Choice Award and the BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll,[3][4] both of which he won.[5][6] He released his debut studio album, In the Lonely Hour, in May 2014 onCapitol Records.[7] The lead single, “Lay Me Down”, was released prior to “La La La”.

The second single, “Money on My Mind”, became his second number one single in the UK.[8] The album’s third single, “Stay with Me”, was an international success, reaching number one in the UK and number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, while the fourth single “I’m Not the Only One” reached the top five in both countries. The fifth single, “Like I Can”, reached number nine in the UK.

In December 2014, Smith was nominated for six Grammy Awards, and at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2015 he won four: Best New Artist, “Stay with Me” for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, andIn the Lonely Hour for Best Pop Vocal Album. At the 2015 Brit Awards, he won the awards for British Breakthrough Act and Global Success.

Well he sounds rather popular. The actual track for SPECTRE will be released later today on HitFix. I’ll update the post as soon as it goes live. SPECTRE hits cinemas on October 26 around most of the world. Locally, it’ll be out on November 27, because I had to do something to ruin your day.
