It’s big, oozy, slimy, can devour anything and came from places unknown. But enough about Kervyn’s fridge. The second remake of The Blob is steaming ahead, having already secured distribution deals all over the globe including over here by us.

Now they just have to make the damn thing, so news that Samuel L. Jackson has been cast in a main role is a sign that we’ll get some massive digestive action soon enough. Jackson will be playing a scientist of some sort who tries to thwart the carnivorous beast from deep below the earth –  or another planet. Reports are a bit conflicting on that one.

Naturally the production leaders are only glowing about his arrival:

Notes director Simon West: “I have been waiting to work with Samuel L. Jackson my whole career. He is a unique talent in the industry, definitely one of a kind. I am so pleased that we will finally get to collaborate on this project.”

“Samuel L. Jackson has a reputation for thrilling audiences in commercial movies that deliver real box office success – this is a huge boost to our distribution partners and just adds to the excitement that is building around the picture,” comments Pascal Degove, Managing Director of Goldcrest Films.

I’d be a bit more excited, but isn’t Jackson the most credited actor in the industry? He appears in pretty much everything and my money says he’ll have that kind of spectacular death that his characters sometimes fall prey to.

Naturally the new movie will make full use of today’s special effects, much like the 1988 and 1958 versions did. I can get behind this – the Blob is a horror icon in its own right and a fun concept to boot. Besides, it was the most fun of a monster attacking a town until Tremors came along.

Really, how hard can it be to screw up a story about a slime ball that just eats and grows and eats? Here’s hoping it will be R-rated!
