You’d be surprised to see which films made in the last couple of years were actually sourced from comic books. Ghost World, A History of Violence and Road to Perdition are just some such examples. But loud and vibrant costumed characters rule the roost when it comes to comic book movies.
One such property that could bridge both the colourful and artistic side of the medium though? Neil Gaiman’s legendary Sandman, which might be bringing an endless Dream to the big screen.
With a new comic on the stands, interest has once again reignited on Sandman. Warner Bros may be interested in adapting that property, as David “Dark Knight trilogy” Goyer has pitched an idea to them, that would have Joseph Gordon Levitt in the lead of Morpheus, king of dreams.
According to Badass Digest, it’s still in the very, very early stages of development and JGL could be the deal-maker here if he agrees to star. A film version of Sandman could be quite daunting though. Over dozens of issues, writer Neil Gaiman weaved a helluva story that had a definitive beginning, middle and end, as the embodiment of Dreams, Morpheus, interacted with the rest of his family. Known as the Endless, they were the personifications of Death, Destruction,Despair,Destiny, Desire and Destruction and Delirium.
There was a larger story at play here, something that a movie could have major difficulty adapting. But a series of films? That could be doable, and it’s hopefully part of the Goyer pitch, as the WB could do with a far more mature franchise.

thought it was going to be a series… such an awesome graphic novel behemoth – needs plenty of space to tell that story. still, i’d be happy to see this on the big screen!

not sure if i like this idea.
given the sheer tripiness of Sandman, I can’t see them having the budget to do the VFX, so it’ll end up being cheesy because of it.
