Sandra Bullock to lead all-female OCEAN'S ELEVEN reboot!

Move over Ghostbusters. Scooch to the side Road House. Just plain get out of the way 21 Jump Street spinoff. There’s a new female-led big franchise reboot on the way, and it’s turning the reboot-dial up to eleven!

The Playlist is reporting that Sandra Bullock is set to lead an all-female reboot of Ocean’s Eleven, the jazzy comedy caper ensemble franchise that was previously headlined by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and more (and which itself was a remake of a 1960 film starring Frank Sinatra and the rest of the Rat Pack), with The Hunger Games‘ Gary Ross attached to direct.

There has been no official announcement as of yet, but The Playlist are pretty solid when it comes to news like this, so it’s probably only a matter of time before the studio announces it properly. This reboot would follow in the footsteps of other recent high-profile gender-swapped franchise reboots (as mentioned above), with studios seemingly seeing this as way to reinvigorate flagging brands while tapping a new audience. Whether or not this is all just band-wagoning and whether it will actually work is still up in the air as the first of them, and the one that kickstarted this whole thing – Paul Feig’s all-female Ghostbusters – has yet to be released.

As far as this new Ocean’s Eleven is concerned though, it’s still unclear whether this is actually a proper reboot or a spinoff of the previous billion dollar grossing Steven Soderbergh directed trilogy, as Playlist’s sources mention that Clooney’s Danny Ocean – the suave ringleader in the previous film about a group of gentlemen criminals who rob a series of casinos in incredibly elaborate fashion – may just be popping in for a cameo appearance. Either way, both Clooney and Soderbergh are apparently on board with this new version as producers.

Clooney and Bullock have had a very good and frequent working relationship over the years – her latest film, Our Brand Is Crisis, was originally written for him – so it should come as no surprise that they’re involved again in another franchise now. The last time the two were on-screen together we got the Oscar-winning magic of Gravity, so maybe they can keep that momentum going here. While Ross, who hasn’t done another major movie since writing/directing the first Hunger Games movie in 2012, is apparently also a close friend of Soderbergh, which definitely makes this whole thing a sort-of family affair.

Playlist also reports that this remake/spinoff is not a recent development as Clooney and Soderberg, along with late producer Jerry Weintraub, wanted to get this rolling last year already, but the project was put on hold with Weintraub’s untimely passing. Things kicked off again a few months back though when Olivia Milch (Queen & Country, Little Women), who has penned her fair share of female-led projects, was brought on board to write the script.

There’s no word yet on any additional cast members besides for Bullock – who has certainly shown her range over the years, playing everything from awkward geek to femme fatale to ball-busting mom – but I’m sure that casting wishlists featuring all the biggest names in the business will be popping up all over the internet this weekend. What do you guys think? Keen on an all-female Ocean’s Eleven, and if so, who would like to see star in it?

This trend of gender switching reboots is getting old.
