SA’s Weekend Top 10 (10 to 12 April)

Nothing to see here, folks. Seriously the top five movies of the past weekend have remained unchanged, though we can go on about how much money Fast & Furious 7 is making. But it’s not a vanilla lineup and the latter part of the Top 10 has had a few shake-ups.

Starting with out first movie, no prizes for guessing it’s Fast & furious 7, the best in the series since the fifth movie and perhaps just the best damn FF yet. Apart from proving that all Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham do wrong is choose bad movies, it also shows that series fans have always been onto a good thing. Sure, the plot is a bit silly, the soppy bits kinda annoying and there are plot holes bigger than The Rock. But who cares? Nobody, which is why this film is cleaning up. It shattered local box office records and also set an opening day record in China.

Second is Cinderella, which debuted in the same spot last week. The Kenneth Branagh-directed film is doing great business, earning double its budget back at the U.S. box office and earning nearly half a billion dollars so far overall.

The Dreamworks animation Home is holding strong at the third spot after sliding down last week to make space for the current two top dogs. At fourth is Insurgent, also holding onto last week’s position and proving to be quite resilient despite critical bushwackings. While it is not outperforming the previous film in the franchise, Divergent, on the international scene, locally the movie is already up to R11.8 million after four weeks whereas Divergent only pulled in R2.8 million for its entire run.

At fifth is the quirky local Afrikaans comedy Strikdas, which debuted last week in that spot. It’s Benny & Joon in Stellenbosch or Meet The Parents, who happen to live on a wine estate or something. Either way, audiences are enjoying it.

Number six is where we find our first new entry, Sean Penn’s stab at the ‘old wolf’ genre. He plays a former assassin in The Gunman whose past comes back to haunt him. Critics say it is dull and plodding – not at all the style of film we experienced in Taken or The Equaliser. So it may not stay around for long once audiences figure that out.

At seven is Ballade Vir ‘n Enkeling, the movie remake of the popular Eighties Afrikaans drama series. Clearly local audiences are enjoying it. Number eight is Will Smith’s Focus, a movie I really thought would have fallen off the charts by now. But it is bucking trends in other markets and doing well. Maybe Smith should come visit and thank his fans.

Number nine is Black Or White, starring Kevin Costner as a man who raises his biracial granddaughter after a tragedy kills his wife. But the child’s black grandmother believes she should raise the child. Queue a dramedy about family, race and all those things. Expect introspection and lots of hugs at the end, but maybe I’m too cynical.

Finally, at tenth is Robot Overlords, starring Gillian Anderson, Ben Kingsley and lots of suspect special effects. Alien robots have taken over the world and IMDB has been overtaken by reviews really not liking this one a lot.

Leaving the screen is The Second Best Marigold Hotel, Boy Next Door and, after a long run, Spongebob Squarepants: Sponge Out Of Water. At this column’s count, it held a local top 10 spot for nine weeks – the longest of the year so far.

But the biggest earner? Fast & Furious 7 with R44.5 million – made in two weeks. It took Fifty Shades of Grey four times that long to make R36 million. Wow.
