SA’s Weekend Top 10 (12 to 14 June)

Unstoppable forces of destruction dominate the local box office this week. No, not Melissa McCarthy and her crew of spies, but dinosaurs.

At number one is the utterly unsurprising debut of Jurassic World, the movie that has been chewing through every opening record it could lay its claws on. The massive hit must be a huge relief for some movie executives and it may stand a chance of eclipsing Fast & Furious 7 as the tentpole movie of the year.

Pushed down one spot is last week’s number one debut, Spy. The secret agent farce is not only getting rave reviews, but may be Melissa McCarthy’s biggest hit yet. At this rate it may also become the comedy sensation of the year.

Moving down a spot to third is Pitch Perfect 2, which continues to be a moneymaker. It was made on only a rumoured $29 million, but is headed towards a $300 million global gross. It practically made its money back twice over during its opening weekend.

Mad Max: Fury Road maintains its hold on the charts, also only slipping down one spot. The high-octane extravaganza is technically a flop, barely doubling its $150 million budget through international earnings. Take off marketing and distribution cuts – and it falls short. But the film is a true cultural and cult hit, which will still make its backers happy.

Fifth is Avengers: Age of Ultron, another never-say-die chart member. In fact, the only reason why it, Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max are moving downs is due to new entries at the top.

Down a step as well, so that means it’s not really falling, is the local drama Treurgrond. Relatively speaking it’s the most stable charting yet for a local movie this year.

At seven is Yellow Bird, a movie that last week sat at ninth and the week previous exited the charts after hanging around for several weeks. In other words, this movie is quite the scrappy fighter, but also capitalising on the lack of movies for kids at the local cinemas.

Poltergeist 3D is the number eight movie, dropping two spots from six last week. That means after filtering in Jurassic World‘s arrival, it still plunged a spot extra – this after climbing two spots last week. Still, the combination of local appetites for horror and a lack of other horror films, these evil spirits are likely to roam the chart for a while longer.

At nine is The Rewrite, the romcom starring Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei. Last week it dropped two spots, so one after factoring in Spy‘s arrival. This week it only went down one spot, so that is a more stable outlook. It may actually live to see another week on the top 10. I thought it would have been ousted by now.

At number ten a new debut, The Riot Club. Based on a popular play, this British thriller-drama tells of the one night where new pledges try and qualify for an elite university fraternity.

Exiting the top 10 this week are uber-bomb Tomorrowland and so-so drama Age of Adaline.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is the current top earner, having brought in just shy of R39.5 million.
