SA’s Weekend Top 10 (13 to 15 Feb)

And the top grossing movie of the week is? Well, no prizes for guessing this one, especially if you read Darryn’s article on it.

There are only two kinds of movies that seem to make tons of money these days. One is the bombastic action film with building-sized plotholes and predictable writing, while the other is the airhead book adaptation. So you either get thin plot and an overflow of explosions or you get the screen version of bad writing ala. Da Vinci Code, Twilight or some Nicholas Sparks adaptations. The latest? Fifty Shades Of Grey – and it is a knockout at the box office, stepping up into first spot on its debut.

Sliding into second place is last week’s number one arrival, the new Spongebob Squarepants: Out Of Water, while third spot goes to one of those bombastic movies, Kingsman: The Secret Service, which reaches the prerequisites: based on a comic and starring Samuel L. Jackson.

The fourth spot on the local charts was maintained by The Wedding Ringer, a comedy about a man who has no friends or something like that. In the U.S. it made back over three times its budget, though international circulation has been modest. Still, this is the year’s first surprise hit comedy where a low(ish) budget ends up making some people a lot of money.

Also holding onto its debut spot for a second week is the local Afrikaans romantic sing-a-long Mooirivier, a rare showing for a South African movie in the local top 10. But following it is almost the plunge of the week: Jupiter Ascending plummets from second to sixth. Having earned back less of a fifth of its budget at the U.S. box office (and it cost over $170 million), this is the biggest flop of the year so far and comparable to the crash that was John Carter, though even that actually made more money. Local audiences aren’t biting either and the movie is descending quite rapidly down the charts.

Sitting at seventh after sliding a notch is the never-say-die Tak3n, the most successful movie on the local charts to date. I’m so good at writing Liam Neeson’s name by now I should be signing his chequebook for him.

The biggest drop over the weekend was the musical Annie, which went from third to eighth, while the biopic The Imitation Game slid down a spot to ninth. And at ten is the debut of Are You Here?, another man-child/road trip movie starring Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis. If you like that kind of thing with those actors, then you’ve probably seen it. But clearly not enough people cared to push it higher on the charts.

Leaving the charts this week are Fury, Selma and Tracers.

Despite Fifty Shades‘ impressive record-breaking debut, Tak3n is still the top overall earner with a total R17.8 million.
