Let’s see what we all paid to see this past weekend… Liam Neeson takes advantage of the January doldrums, but the first breakthrough star of the year is clearly a small bear.

Yes, Paddington is not only doing well all over the world, but local crowds are also flocking to see the strange bear in a strange land. But the furry Peruvian still had to take a second place to Tak3n, which despite poor reviews and calls for the series to be ‘taken care of’ rocked global screens. That said, it’s not doing as well as the second film – the most successful in the franchise – and probably won’t match the lifetime grosses of either of its predecessors.

Tinkerbell & The Neverbeast continues to be popular, sliding down only one spot to third, but the biggest plunge of the week is Seventh Son, dropping four spots from its debut last week. Nick will be very pleased. Big Hero 6, Exodus and Night At The Museum 3 both also dropped a spot, but Into The Woods climbed one rung. The all-star fairytale mash-up seems to be holding its own and no doubt a studio exec somewhere is breathing more easily.

The third Hobbit also dropped a spot and John Wick finally departs the charts, along with St Vincent. Instead fans of Nicholas Sparks’ novels (The Notebook, A Walk To Remember) helped sweep The Best Of Me into the tenth spot. The Hobbit remains the biggest earner on the chart with a total of over R24 million.
