SA’s Weekend Top 10 (17 to 19 April)

Do you hear what I hear? It’s Vin Diesel’s heavy breathing as he moves his cash from one private yacht to the next! No awards for guessing this week’s top movie…

Fast & Furious 7 has done it again. For the third week in a row the action extravaganza dominates the local box office, as it has been doing pretty much everywhere else. By this point there is little to add, other than to go see it – especially if you enjoyed the fifth film.

This column needs no evidence that South African audiences love seeing Liam Neeson kick ass. He helped make Tak3n a big hit despite being universally panned and now the man with the Irish brogue is back with Run All Night. Neeson plays a mob assassin who has to protect his son when the bad guys put out a hit on the offspring.

Making space for Liam’s ass-kicking, Cinderella slips down one spot to third, while the animated movie Home also drops a single spot and settles at fourth.

longestride

Fans of Nicholas Sparks’ soppy romance novels have been lining up to watch The Longest Ride, debuting at the fifth spot. It’s something about a rodeo rider, a smart pretty girl and some old guy who gives them perspective. Clearly I’m not a Sparks fan, but you can still buy me a coffee.

Afrikaans film Strikdas steps down one spot, but after three weeks on the charts it is clearly doing well. So is Ballade Vir ‘n Enkeling, which remains at seventh after a month on the charts.

At eight we find the found-footage antics of a bunch of time-travelling teenagers in Project Almanac. Having cost only $12 million, even as a modest hit it is making a nice profit.

The biggest tumble of the week is Sean Penn’s The Gunman. Professing to be another ‘old wolf kicking ass’ movie, it is apparently instead drab and convoluted, so down it went by three places to nine.

Finally, the tenth spot is now the home of Insurgent, the Divergent sequel. This is its fifth weekend on the charts, but the teenage sci-fi thriller is not likely to make it to a sixth.

Top earner of the year so far is… can you guess? Just ask Vin. South African has splashed out over R53 million to see his movie. That is nearly R10 million up from last week!
