SA’s Weekend Top 10 (17 to 19 July)

What we got here is… is musical chairs. Sometimes films just don’t leave. So you get what we had here last week. Seriously, it’s pretty much last week.

If you can identify the misappropriated source of my intro – and didn’t say ‘Guns n Roses’, you get special movie geek points. But if you didn’t, don’t worry. No geekdom is required to go watch Minions. But you can geek out about the yellow mutants – they have already surpassed the global earnings of the original.

At number two we can make sense of my musical chairs intro. Jurassic World resurges past Terminator Genisys back to number two.

If you read the previous sentence, you know that at third is Terminator Genisys. It’s a flop – the worst performing Terminator movie yet, other than the original movie. And even that wins once you adjust for inflation.

At number four is Pixar’s Inside Out, fresh back from a trip to fifth place last week. It has changed spots with…

San Andreas. Yup, last week’s number four is now at five. Remember, when the song stops you gotta sit down fast.

Magic Mike XXL sat down fast and kept its chair, staying at sixth for the second week. Still, it’s doing horribly if you use the original as a benchmark.

I made that same observation last week, then noted Ted 2 has the same problem. I might as well repeat that again, because Ted 2 is, at seven, also not moving.

At eight is Spy, which has moved nowhere to stay at eight.

OMFG, what is this? Something new?! Black Sea is the sole debut on the charts this week, a thriller starring Jude Law. At least one review on IMDB makes this sound pretty good…

Finally, at tenth is Hollywood in my Huis. I really thought it was on its way out after settling at nine last week, but this local rom com is showing a little more staying power.

Leaving the charts is the fun crime thriller Life of Crime. The top earned on the charts is Jurassic World with R38 million. That is roughly 100 million times what I have under my couch.
