Yay! Finally a weekend top 10 that does not have movies aimed at kids! Well, technically it does – but we’re going to let this one slide. After all, does anyone still believe Spongebob Squarepants was really made for children and not drunk (or otherwise) twenty somethings? I still know all the words to that theme song. C’mon, let’s have a sing-a-long. Arrrrrrr ya ready kids?
Yup, the new Spongebob Squarepants movie has arrived and true to its international form took the top spot. The sea born characters make their way onto dry land and into 3D, crushing the hopes of another blockbuster. Jupiter Ascending slots into a number 2 spot debut, slightly better than the drubbing it is receiving in the U.S. The Wachowskis might be able to make pretty movies, but it is becoming a bit hard for their fans to keep defending them.
Annie, which debuted at the top spot last week has moved down to third, which is not bad considering the newcomers that took the first two spots. The comedy The Wedding Ringer arrives at fourth spot, showing that locals still love their American comedies to bit.
The local Afrikaans Hartiwood industry (not to be confused with the local Hartiwood production studio) also shows its muscle with a fifth spot debut of Mooirivier, a romcom complete with music and shiny, happy people.
Love or hate it, but Tak3n continues to hold onto the chart. After its debut early in January, the Liam Neeson juggernaut keeps on snapping necks and clearing its name. Still, the movie shares the distinction for the biggest drop in rank this week: from second to sixth.
It may also irk fans of Fury that the war drama, despite getting some fantastic reviews from our readers and reviewers alike, also dropped five spots, crashing from third to seventh position. The Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game did slightly better, falling four spots to eight.
Debuting at ninth is the historical drama Selma, which has also enjoyed a lot of exposure thanks to some government tie-ins. The poignant story about the struggle for black rights in America does resonate with our own South African story.
Finally, the action thriller Tracers also plummeted five spots, from fifth to tenth. Disappearing off the charts this week are Paddington, Tinkerbell & the Neverbeast, Barbie: Princess Power and Big Hero 6.
The current biggest earner on the charts is not surprisingly Tak3n with R16.5 million.
