If you still haven’t seen robot men or skydiving cars in action, you are not alone. Many still flock to the movies for those experiences. But there’s something for you Segway fans too…
Avengers: Age Of Ultron is still taking the lead at the local box office, as it is everywhere else. The sequel still lags behind its predecessor, but that’s the domestic (US) box office picture. The team of superheroes are more popular in their second visit to foreign markets, which at this rate might still push the sequel past the original’s earnings. If that happens, it may be a first for such a large blockbuster.
Speaking of large earners, Fast & Furious 7 remains near the top of the pack, refusing to budge. It may still end up as the biggest earner of the year and at $1.4 billion worldwide is already the fourth-biggest grossing movie ever. In fact, it just needs another $100 million to dethrone The Avengers from its third spot.
Speaking of third, next on the local chart is Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, the sequel to Kevin James’ fluffy comedy about an overweight mall security guard who saves the day and gets the girl. Now he’s in Vegas for something and will probably have to save the day again.
At number four and dropping one spot from its debut last week, Get Hard is nonetheless staying around and giving local audience a dose of Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart’s colourful comedy.
The fifth spot is a movie called Somer Son, another entrant from the local Afrikaans movie industry. It’s a comedy about a married couple whose mundane lives and failing relationship are reinvigorated by a a series of mishaps in the tropics.
Number six is The Duff, a sharp teen comedy about the less attractive girl in school. It’s been doing well all round, but here it dropped two spots.
Making a surprise leap upwards is Far From The Madding Crowd, an adaptation of a popular Victorian-era romance novel. It clearly struck a chord with some South Africans, as the film debuted at tenth last week and has since moved up three spots to number seven!
Number eight makes space for Yellow Bird, an animation for the kids. It’s about an orphaned city bird who accidentally ends up in a flock migrating to Africa.
Cinderella, the live-action remake of the classic Disney animation, sits at number nine, dropping four spots since last week, That is a lot, but it is also the oldest movie currently on the local charts and is reaching the end of its shelf life.
Finally, number ten is the arrival of Child 44, a thriller about child murders in Stalin’s Soviet Union.
This week we say goodbye to French Toast, Run All Night, Book of Life and Home.
Fast & Furious 7 is the biggest earner at the local box office with over R68 million. Yet last week it was R71 million, so this new figure is probably a mistake…
