What’s cooking at the local box office? The latest charts are out and it’s an interesting mix of movies that clearly show parents trying to keep their kids entertained.
Movies aimed at smaller folk take up a good chunk of the chart: Tinkerbell & the Neverbeast is second, followed by Paddington and the animated blockbuster Big Hero 6. The sixth spot goes to the third chapter of the Night At The Museum films. Into The Woods is at number eight, though I am just guessing it’s for kids. Somehow an ensemble movie about fairy tales just doesn’t sound like my kinda thing, but that’s one jaded moviegoer’s opinion.
There is some stuff for older people: Exodus is halfway up the chart and the third Hobbit film holds on at number seven. It is also the reigning earner on the chart, having earned over R24 million in total so far. The Melissa McCarthy and Bill Murray comedy St. Vincent is ninth while Keanu Reeves’ comeback movie John Wick is making a graceful exit at tenth after a successful run.
But at number one? A movie that Nick insists is to bad that only nachos stopped him from inflicting violence onto others. The Seventh Son was the most-watched movie of the weekend, but we’ll have to wait and see if it can retain that spot. After all, it’s a slow start to the year and there is nothing quite like it on the circuit, so maybe beggars truly aren’t choosers. But if it holds on to its success, we might have to send Nick back, sans snacks, to give it a second look…
