When all things are said and done, pandas are a good investment. Just ask China, the WWF and that guy from Tenacious D.

Here’s a good tip for upcoming comedic stars: make sure you get your fingers into an animated franchise. Jack Black can again afford new shoes with Kung Fu Panda 3, which despite under-performing to the rest of the series, is doing well and gets a top spot debut in South Africa. Hey, if it worked for him, Adam Sandler, Ray Romano and Mike Myers…

  • 02. DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT (Incl Imax)

allegiant-still-1

Speaking of franchises, nobody predicted the Divergent films would maintain their run this long. And these teen movies are not a sure bet: just ask The 5th Wave. But the third film is here and the fourth chapter already in the works.

  • 03. ZOOTROPOLIS (Incl 3D)

The new Disney animation is doing fantastically well, but it seems that predictions of it taking the crown from Frozen may have been premature. It dropped two spots from its debut last week.

  • 04. LONDON HAS FALLEN

Gerard Butler continues to save the world in this sequel, but can’t stop a two spot drop. That said, he was replaced by animations and teenage revolution, so as an action film for adults this is not a big step down. But can it hold a spot in the top 5?

  • 05. HAPPINESS IS A FOUR LETTER WORD

This local film is doing incredibly well, suggesting that South Africa’s golden movie age may be slowly approaching.

  • 06. DEADPOOL (Incl 3D & Imax)

It’s a bit of a tumble for Deadpool, down from 3rd last week. But it has had a very lucrative run and slowly exits the way all big blockbusters do.

  • 07. ZOOLANDER 2

Second time is not the charm: after a lacklustre 5th spot debut last week, the Zoolander sequel dropped two more spots. That  means audiences aren’t interested.

  • 08. RISEN

Risen_920x920

Religious movies get a little traction on the local charts, especially dramas such as War Room. But Risen failed to tap that same market and debuted at a lowly 8th. That said, such religious movies can surge as word of mouth does around. You really just need a few pastors to go on at the pulpit about how great it is…

  • 09. VIR ALTYD

This Afrikaans comedy has pretty much taken all the records for its audience and genre. It sets a very high bar, but local movies are increasingly starting to reach up. Between this and Happiness Is A Four Letter Word, we can feel very optimistic about Saffawood.

  • 10. SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE

A romcom for the cynical generation, nobody seems that interested. It debuted at 10th, which is pretty much saying ‘Thank you for coming.’

  • SEE YOU ON VOD…

Gods of Egypt tumbles from 6th to nowhere, underpinning general sentiment that it’s a crap film. The drone-based drama Eye In The Sky also failed to attract viewers, Triple 9‘s departure again shows SA’s disinterest in crime movies and local movie Sonskyn Beperk hardly makes a mark in a full purge of the previous week’s last four positions.
