SA’s Weekend Top 10 Chart: Sorry, APOCALYPSE, there can be only one vapid pop culture movie at the top

Sometimes I wonder if covering these charts will qualify me as experienced at sea? One minute all is quiet, then the next all hell breaks loose. Then I watch All Is Lost and get reminded that I’m in trouble if I had the penthouse suite on a luxury liner, let alone run the damn boat.

Still, prolonged exposure to movie charts can create an aura of vertigo, when gravity and your inner ear just don’t seem to be on the same page. Last week things were so stable that I nearly just copied the rankings from the week before that. But this past weekend a triad of newcomers destroyed the box office alignment.

Warcraft and Now You See Me 2 came tearing in, ignoring the harsh critical reviews they have gotten, and stomped right into first and second position. Angry Birds managed to hold off some of the assault, only falling one spot, but then The Conjuring 2 showed up and slotted into fourth position. It will be interesting to see how this does, since horrors have a more miss-than-hit reputation with local audiences.

When the charts are in a riot, someone has to get hurt, and X-Men: Apocalypse dropped an eye-watering 5 positions – one of the hardest falls I’ve ever seen from the top position.

Things only went marginally better for Alice Through The Looking Glass, which went down three spots to 6th. That is compounded by the fact that Alice hasn’t been on the charts that long and may be headed to a forgettable run.

Money Monster also felt the brunt of bored audiences, crashing four spots from its debut last week. But this is not surprising, since these types of movies don’t do too well locally. Even The Big Short did so-so in our market. The Boss dropped several spots as well, showing that maybe Melissa McCarthy should stop working with her husband. He also helped her make Tammy, so enough said…

Not much else, but to tip a hat to Mrs. Right Guy, the local rom com that made a million in its first week and is still doing well, despite dropping two spots. That said, it may have a longevity problem when compared to some previous local films that charted.

Three in, three out. Bastille Day is gone after a disappointing run and Idris Alba has yet to prove himself leading man material. Bad Neighbours 2 also exits after a so-so run, but at least Captain America: Civil War leaves a successful wake behind it.
