SA’s Weekend Top 10: Deadpool finally drops

Deadpool deserves all the success it can get, but after four weeks at the top it finally steps down from the throne.

01. ZOOTROPOLIS (Incl 3D)

The first huge animation hit of the year goes to Disney, which takes a small bunny to a giant city full of animals, where it becomes a cop. Maybe it has a catchy song, so we can only hope those Frozen songs will stop being so popular.

02. LONDON HAS FALLEN

Gerard Butler isn’t enjoying much of a hit with Gods of Egypt, where he is actually the villain but the marketing guys are trying to convince audience otherwise. Fortunately the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen is making a tidy profit all over the world.

03. DEADPOOL (Incl 3D & Imax)

It’s been a great run, but Deadpool is started its slow exit off the charts. It might recover one spot back to second, but an animated movie like Zootropolis will be hard to shift.

04. HAPPINESS IS A FOUR LETTER WORD

This local comedy is having a fantastic run. In fact, it is the best performance for a non-Afrikaans local movie I’ve seen since starting to write this column.

05. GODS OF EGYPT (Incl 3D & Imax)

Last week this was in the second spot and since dropped three spots. Vultures are circling this blockbuster bomb.

06. VIR ALTYD

Another great local performer, this romantic comedy sets up great expectations for South African movies in 2016.

07. HOW TO BE SINGLE

Films like this are very hit-and-miss locally: for example, Trainwreck and Sisters did hardly any business in South African cinemas. But How to Be Single is bucking the trend with a solid run, dropping only two spots since last week.

08. ROOM

It’s a very disappointing 8th place debut for what is an excellent movie. But it had several award nominations and will be a hit on VOD and DVD.

09. 50 SHADES OF BLACK

Audiences are catching on to the horror of this spoof, which fell three spots and will be gone soon.

10. THE REVENANT (incl Imax)

The Oscar wins for The Revenant pushed a bunch of people to finally see it, surging the movie back into the top 10 after leaving last week.

HAVE A NICE DAY!

Bye, bye, Grimsby, a spy spoof that clearly nobody anywhere cares to watch. Ride Along 2, on the other hand, was seen by everyone and retires in style. Not so much for Solace, out of the charts after just one week. I bet it wished it was a Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy instead, since Daddy’s Home also exits the chart after a lucrative run.
