SA’s Weekend Top 10 – I don't wanna get high

Ow, ow ow. They should have called it American Dulltra. *badum-pish!*

Yes, that’s a terrible joke. But it may be enough to get me onto the American Ultra sequel… which will never happen. Not me not being hired as a Hollywood writer as much as there being a sequel. Apparently it’s a pretty average affair and the stoner action comedy just barely made the charts in its debut.

At ninth that has to be the worst a-list title debut of the year. The closest comparison I can think of is We Are Your Friends – and it’s not really in the same league. The movie also had a very low opening in the US – despite costing only around $28 million, after three weeks it is only halfway on earning that back.

But the real oddity is The Martian, which slipped another spot to fourth. Normally such a slight drop is not a big deal for a big movie, but it only had a third place debut last week and I was expecting it to gain or at least keep a spot.

Yet Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials continued to outperform it. Meanwhile the top two films say a lot about a big movie watching demographic in SA: kids! Hotel Transylvania 2 stuck to its top spot, forcing Pan to enter at second.

PAN

The third debut is crime thriller Sicario, Rolling in the murky world of US agents battling cartels in Mexico, it’s been doing solid business and looks like a hit. It’s certainly reviewing well and for what it is made a reasonable sixth spot debut. Fun fact: a Sicario is an assassin hired by Mesoamerican organised crime. So this movie means business.

The rest experienced modest shifts. Odd couple comedy The Intern only slipped one spot, so it’s clearly struck a chord. Thriller The Perfect Guy dropped two spots to seventh, as did Straight Outta Compton at eighth. Maya The Bee hovered down one spot and will likely slip out of the charts next week as newcomers push it out.

10. HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 (Incl 3D)
02. PAN (incl 3D)
03. MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS (incl 3D)
04. THE MARTIAN (incl 3D)
05. THE INTERN
06. SICARIO
07. THE PERFECT GUY
08. STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON
09. AMERICAN ULTRA
10. MAYA THE BEE (incl 3D)

Transporter: Refueled left the charts after a surprisingly good run, while Everest bowed out without making much of an impact. Schuks: Pay Back The Money also finally left the top as the best performing local movie of the year. Probably of the past decade.

Hotel Transylvania 2 is now the leading chart earner with R12 million in total earnings. What’s that sound? It’s Adam Sandler telling us to suck it.
