SA's Weekend Top 10: fear and loathing in Never Never Land

We have arrived at that point in Jack Black’s career where he can play someone’s forty-something dad. A bit like when Nicolas Cage appeared in Kick-Ass. Cage has been a fictional dad several times before, so maybe it was the Batman-esque owl helmet, but for some reason that moment stuck.

Anyway, that’s the only real observation I have about this weekend’s number one film, Goosebumps, other than to add that last time Jack Black was in a hit of this magnitude, the US had a different president. That’s a long dry streak!

Now, let’s talk about Pan.

Apparently this extravaganza needed to make $400 million to recoup the total investment. After two dismal weeks locally Peter Pan and company have collapsed from second to seventh, briefly holding onto fourth last week. It has been a total disaster in the US. China, the movie counterweight continent, didn’t like it either. This is making Tomorrowland look like an unfortunate mistake!

Hotel Transylvania 2 is still the real heavyweight, sitting patiently at second until we see what Goosebumps is made of. The only real other film with buoyancy is Maze Runner: Scorch Trials – at sixth it is slowly making its exit, but will probably still be around when the new Hunger Games arrives in a few weeks.

I’m less certain about Burnt. It had a solid chart-topping arrival last week, but then slipped to second. Local drama Dis Ek Anna also moved down two spots to fifth, but it may stay a few weeks more.

Supernatural horror Crimson Peak entered at fourth. That means Bradley Cooper’s tantrums were still more interesting on Halloween than the only horror film. Ouch.

But for sadness there can also be happiness. This is your zen moment, you people popping champagne over thriller The Perfect Guy‘s solid six week run. Now at tenth, the surprise hit is bowing out, but it did very well for something with no superheroes or CG backdrops.

Speaking of effects, a well-honed old school one is to make the same main actor appear twice in one movie. Tom Hardy enters the sacred halls reserved for Jean Claude-Van Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jackie Chan… and Lindsay Lohan: the two for one movie. He plays British mobster twins the Krays in Legend. But nobody seems to care and it arrived at ninth.

This weekend’s chart went ahead without three movies. Family comedy The Jakes Are Missing left town after one week, but at least it charted – which is not bad for a local film. Black Mass and The Walk both fade with less grace, having only held two weeks each.

Hotel Transylvania 2 leads the table with over R16 million in total earnings.
