I have a suspicion nobody actually reads these columns, so let’s talk about my lunch yesterday: tuna on brown bread with cucumber and lettuce. Yum. The trick is to not use too much mayo and maybe blend a little ranch dressing in there. Also, serve the cucumber on the sides as sticks. Maybe I’ll do the same today, but with carrots.

01. SECRET LIFE OF PETS, THE (incl 3D)
For some reason the weekly earnings have not been posted on Box Office Mojo, so we’ll need to skip the usual analysis of who made how much. But The Secret Life of Pets remains at the top for a second week.
02. MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN (incl 3D & 4DX)
Tim Burton found billion dollar club gold with Alice in Wonderland, but his other recent projects were far less successful. The second spot debut locally of his latest movie is a bit of a a disappointment, reflecting adequate but unimpressive performances in other markets.
03. THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN
Emily Blunt is slowly becoming one of the most respected actors of our current times, jumping from action to comedy to political thrillers with little effort. Still, to have her name alongside words like ‘Hitchcockian’ is quite something, so is a third place debut for an adult thriller. To compare, Scicario debuted at seventh. If Blunt was a company, I’d buy stock in her.
04. DEEPWATER HORIZON (Incl Imax & 4DX)
Mark Wahlberg versus gushing oil is doing better than I anticipated, mainly shifting back to make space for two newcomers. It would appear South Africans enjoy plucky survival movies.
05. MAGNIFICENT 7 (incl Imax)
It’s not going that well for the Magnificent 7 remake, falling way behind True Grit and Django Unchained‘s momentum and instead matching The Lone Ranger. That said, it cost a third that notorious bomb did.
06. BRIDGET JONES’S BABY
Bridget is slowly sliding out of view as fans get enough of her antics. But it can happily relax into motherhood, knowing it was a relative success.
07. SY KLINK SOOS LENTE
Local romantic comedies tend to do well, though not if they choose bad titles. This film’s name seems far too soppy for the quirky comedy it appears to be. Sliding two places, it’s still doing okay for a local movie, but could have done better.
08. MECHANIC RESURRECTION
The Stath’s latest film relinquishes only one position as audience still show up for a few last thrills. Jason should buy a house in SA, because this country loves him.
09. BAD MOMS
Bad Moms takes an unexpected dive after a really lucrative few weeks. Then again, even popular movies eventually lose momentum and the longer they keep going, the harder the slowdown tends to be.
10. SUICIDE SQUAD (incl 3D, Imax & 4DX)
So long Suicide Squad. You may not have filled the holes inside comic book fans that they try to fill with crass consumerism exploiting their nostalgia, but you sure did help cover the gaps in WB’s bank account.
Two in, so something’s gotta give. Ben Hur is gone, making as notorious a hole as its predecessor is famous for winning awards. The cat comedy Nine Lives also quits the top ten, but still found an elevated sunny spot to sleep in.
