If there was ever a case to be made that South African and American movie tastes don’t align, then this weekend past’s local box office charts would Exhibit A. Three new movies were released on Friday, two of which sharing their release date with the USA. However, there positions on the charts just got flipped upside down. So I’d like to a minute, so sit right there, and I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air Tom Cruise ganged up with some trolls to beat Tyler Perry.

Local audiences flocked to the skop, skiet en donner joys of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, giving it a first place debut. It wasn’t the greatest of openings though with just R2.7 million. In comparison, The Secret Life of Pets brought in nearly twice as much when it opened a few weeks back.

Following on Tom Cruise’s clearly elevated heels was a different CG animated family film though, as Dreamworks’ Trolls captured second place with R2.3 million. Much like Jack Reacher, that was a rather middling debut. However, combined the two movies did enough business to relegate Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween to a third place spot with just R1.3 million.

As mentioned, this was the inverse of what took place on the US charts last weekend, where Madea trounced Jack Reacher. You would think that with SA’s love of slapstick comedy (Oh, hello there, Leon Schuster! No, please, go back to counting all your money!), the local chart would follow suit, but surprisingly not.

Bridget Jones's Baby

Bye, Deepwater Horizon. After four weeks on the charts, the Peter Berg directed true-story disaster flick only managed to scrape together just more than R6 million rand. That’s simply not enough. It does match it’s international earning patterns though, as the $110 million film is still $15 million shy of recouping its production budget. Also dropping off the charts this week is local Afrikaans drama Sy Klink Soos Lente, which managed to scrounge up R2.2 million, and Disney’s African set biopic Queen of Katwe. The former’s total is a respectable amount for this type of movie, but the latter has been an overall failure for Disney. Internationally, it’s just barely managed to make back half of its $15 million budget.
