SA’s Weekend Top 10: The Bat is Back

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s just another opportunity for the internet to lose its marbles over something utterly inconsequential. Not since the pointless debates around the new Star Wars have so many wasted so much brain power on so little.

  • 01. BATMAN VS SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE (Incl 3D)

To be honest, I don’t want to dip even a toe into the maelstrom of Batman vs. Superman controversy, the result of a market that overheats with fan-hype. What’s the difference between a prostitute and a geek culture fan? At least prostitutes get paid. So do the makers of BvS, which like all territories shot straight to the top for its debut. But will it still be there next week?

  • 02. KUNG FU PANDA 3 (Incl 3D)

The third Kung Fu Panda film took a step down after its top spot debut last. This is the poorest performing film in the franchise, though not by a big gap. It’s still a hit. But does this mean parents get two hours of peace or do they have to go sit in the cinema as well?

  • 03. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2

Presumably someone else is getting married in this sequel, else it should be called My Big Fat Greek Divorce. Well, there is a wedding, but this appears to have a lot more to do with the marriage of the first film. Maybe we should call it My Big Fat Greek Midlife Crisis?

  • 04. ZOOTROPOLIS (Incl 3D)

The animation darling of the year continues to impress, dropping down a mere single position from last week. But despite coming hot out of the gates, Zootropolis is not in the all-time animation top 10 yet. Interesting side fact: Frozen is only fourth and not first as many marketing slogans have claimed.

  • 05. LONDON HAS FALLEN

Despite a lot of good press, London Has Fallen is a bit of a flop – just barely meeting its $60 million budget and performing worse than its predecessor, Olympus Has Fallen. But maybe Americans just don’t care about films that aren’t in Yankeeland or space. The international figures are yet to be tallied and hopefully they are good. The movie certainly is enjoying a good run in South Africa, dropping only one spot.

  • 06. DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT (Incl Imax)

Bombs away! From a second place debut last week to 6th this past weekend, Allegiant is cratering hard.

  • 07. HAPPINESS IS A FOUR LETTER WORD

This local comedy is doing amazingly well – hands-down the best performance I have ever seen for an English-language South African film. It’s down two spots since last week, but lesser films would have slunk away a long time ago.

  • 08. RISEN

Last week I wondered if Risen will get a surge once Christian communities catch word that it’s for them. That may have been the case, but not enough for a surge – the movie stayed put at its 8th spot debut from last week. All things considered, that is still a win. It’s not easy to keep your spot on the charts.

  • 09. DEADPOOL (Incl 3D & Imax)

The merc with a mouth is getting ready to retire from the charts, but not after settling every R-rated record that can be found, outside perhaps the most swearing and nudity on screen.

  • 10. VIR ALTYD

Another local wonder, Vir Altyd comes to the end of a fantastic run that saw it take the earnings record for local Afrikaans movies.

  • ON A MIDNIGHT TRAIN TO GEORGIA

Zoolander 2 is gone after a mere two weeks – look, say what you want about Adam Sandler, but at least he still makes interesting comedies. Ben Stiller, on the other hand, lost his touch years ago. Sleeping With Other People, which debuted at the dead-end spot of tenth last week, also bought a ticket out of here.
