Despite appearing in as many as five Marvel movies so far and with at least two more appearances planned to date, it’s almost surprising that Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanov, aka the Black Widow, hasn’t appeared in her own film yet. Many characters have arrived on the scene and played a smaller part in the greater MCU and now have their own solo films planned, and yet the mysterious heroine who keeps on saving the world, still only gets grouped as part of a team effort and never gets to express her skills on her own.

And although her deep back-story is probably enough to justify a solo movie, Marvel has at present not revealed any intent on showing it in their current movie pipeline. It’s something fans are increasingly calling for, especially as she stands out as one of the few female heroines in the Marvel universe and with the only planned solo female led film going to be the introduction of Captain Marvel for March 2019 (though the next Ant-Man movie in 2018 will be titled Ant-Man and The Wasp and be the first to feature a female character in its title).

However, Johansson is still keen and hopeful that a Black Widow movie could be made and got to chat to Variety about her thoughts on what the character could do in a solo movie:

I would like for it to happen under the right circumstances. I think there’s a lot of opportunity to mine that story line. She’s got a really rich origins story. There’s a lot of places you can go — you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program. There’s all kinds of stuff that you could do with it. You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she’s part of.

And I think that would actually make for a great movie. With the mystery around the character and her origins only increasing as each movie rolls by, it might make a lot of sense for Marvel to visit this past and solve some of these mysteries. As Johannsson can’t play the character forever, it could also be a nice way of bringing her character’s storyline to a close as well, something which I’m sure Marvel may consider. It does seem like Johansson sees a potential solo film as a prequel though rather than a concluding chapter to the character:

It’s a possibility. There’s plenty of back story. Or not. It could be something else. Where do the Avengers go? They are underground. What happens then? What happens after it all falls apart? There are so many ways you can go. I think it would just have to be very much like its own specific thing. It would have to have its own specific vibe. It would have been totally different than any of the other standalone films. I think if the fans wanted it enough, then it would probably become a reality. I talked to them [Marvel] about it often. It would have to fit in the idea of where they want to go. I’m invested in that character. Marvel is greatly invested in that character. If I did it, I’d have to do it while I still actually wanted to wear a skin-tight cat suit. I don’t know how much longer that’s going to be.

As her character relies mostly on espionage rather than big special effects, it’s likely they could make it on a smaller budget as well, only making the film even more appetizing for Marvel. It could also give further opportunity to show how her and Hawk-Eye potentially teamed up for a lethal combination. And it’s an idea that’s not too far-fetched as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously stated to Deadline that the studio is “committed” to making a solo film for the character in the future:

We’ve announced the next nine movies, ten counting Civil War, through the end of 2019. Where we go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow…We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a standalone franchise.

Marvel’s current movie roadmap is already quite detailed and laid out, but there are three Marvel Studios movies without titles set for release in 2020 on May 1, July 10, and November 6, so there is a hope that one of those could still be a solo Black Widow movie.

If Lucy counted as a movie, then the Black Widow might as well be a (potential) blockbuster. I’ll watch it in grey scaling
