I’m calling it now, 2013 is going to see a serious push for more movies based on video games, much like the early 2000s did for comic book movies. The latest such film to get thrown onto the adaptation surgery table however, is one that actually has a pretty damn good story, legacy and style, in the form of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
And it’s got a “Sinister” director to lead the way.
Primarily a series of first-person shooter games with an emphasis on stealth and preparation, the latest game in the series, 2011’s Human Revolution, served as a prequel to the series and saw security agent Adam Jensen become involved in a growing conspiracy revolving around human modification and the various social impacts that the augmentation technology brought with it.
Scott “Sinister” Derrickson is going to in charge of this one, with script assists from C. Robert Cargill, while Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh are attached to produce the film with John P. Middleton serving as an executive producer
Askarieh is no stranger to video game movie productions though, as he helped bring to life Hitman, and is now also working on a Kane & Lynch adaptation, all three properties which fall under the same creative umbrella that is Square Enix.
Set in the near future, when dramatic advances in science, specifically human augmentation, have triggered a technological renaissance, Deus Ex: Human Revolution follows Adam Jensen, an ex-SWAT security specialist who must embrace mechanical augments in order to unravel a global conspiracy.
Deus Ex Human Revolution was a bit of a rough game last year, but one with a magnificent story and design, that really elevated the final product. A cyberpunk adventure with a Renaissance twist that was filled with mind-bending theories and conspiracies, it’s become a cult classic in the year since it was released.
And if Derrickson can capture that style and tone, we might just have a winner on our hands here.

I’m already making plans to draft articles on all the great games that should be moviefied. And for some reason, Steel Battalion: Heavy Armour is on that list.
