Season 6 of THE WALKING DEAD could finally introduce the worst villain yet

I’ve mentioned before how The Walking Dead is an ok TV show based on a fantastic comic. And that’s because the comic book that spawned the show, is more than ready to go places that the series doesn’t exactly have the stomach to handle.

Negan (3)

Sure, a ton of the comic book source material has been adequately adapted on the small screen, but that series is missing something. And that something is a proper villain. Sure, the Governor may be somebody who hassled Grimes and his crew of survivours, but even he pales in comparison to a certain madman that popped up in the comics.

So massive spoiler warnings for what’s ahead, although I’ll keep them to a minimum.

When it comes to bad guys in the post-apocalypse of The Walking Dead, there is nobody worse than Negan in the comics. An unrelenting maniac, Negan is what Hannibal Lector would be if he replaced cannibalism with sadism and started bench-pressing the fattest zombies around.

Negan isn’t just a violent and calculating savage in the comics, he’s a smart leader who has practically assembled an entire army around him through sheer force, will and terror. And don’t even ask him about getting to meet…Lucille.

Negan (2)

In the comics, Negan takes Grimes and other survivors to the brink in the biggest war that the series has ever seen since the zombie epidemic began. And it’s a war that nobody walks away from unscathed.

In an interview with EW, showrunner Scott Gimple shared his thoughts on the possibility of Negan making an appearance sooner than later:

It’s absolutely a possibility, and when I say it’s a possibility, we have a plan in place, but there’s a couple variables for that plan that we’re deciding about. It really depends on a few factors as we move into setting up the last bit of the season story-wise.

Negan (1)

And according to Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman, introducing Negan needs to be done in a manner that doesn’t betray fan expectations:

When it comes to characters like The Governor, Michonne, Abraham, and others like Jesus and Negan who are fan-favorite characters in the comics, it’s always a challenge to get it right because it’s those characters—much like Rick Grimes in the beginning—that fans already have a sense of and expectations for. So we’re always careful, and I feel like we’ve done a really good job servicing those fan expectations.  Hopefully that trend will continue…if the characters you mention are to appear soon.

So who could play Negan? Maybe Jon Hamm, as he teased the possibility of taking on the role, to MTV:

Season 6 of the Walking Dead kicks off in October, with newcomers such as Ethan Embry, Merritt Wever, and Corey Hawkins joining the cast. If they can survive meeting Lucille that is.
