Videogames are big business, no longer relegated to the hobby of hygiene challenged nerds in their parents’ basements. Okay, so Darryn is a hygiene challenged nerd playing games in his parents’ basement, but that’s beside the point. The fact is that the videogame industry is one of the biggest in the world, and now Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will be bringing to life one of that industry’s biggest rivalries in Console Wars.

Based on Blake Harris’ upcoming book, “Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation”, as implied by the title, Console Wars will be documenting the rivalry that erupted between at the time industry giants Sega and Nintendo. The battle between the two console manufacturers would help to shape the videogame industry in the 1990’s, laying the groundwork for the cultural phenomenon that the industry would become.

According to the report from Kotaku, The Social Network producer Scott Rudin acquired the rights to the soon to be published novel for Sony Pictures (ironically, a subsidiary of the company that is now engaged in the biggest rivalry in the videogame industry),and has brought on Rogen and Goldberg to both write and direct the feature film. The duo are mainly known for their comedic work, like the recent apocalyptic comedy This Is the End, but have been branching out dramatically as of late, also adapting controversial comic book Preacher for AMC.

Harris’ book, which “draws on hundreds of interviews to present the first full account of this titanic corporate battle which transformed computer games into a global industry that last year recorded sales of $50 billion (surpassing the film and music businesses combined),” is definitely not a funny tale, so it will be interesting to see where Rogen and Goldberg take it. There’s some talk that Rogen may also be appearing in front of the camera in the film, but that’s still pretty unsubstantiated at this point in time.

As a kid who took part in all those schoolyard debates back in the day about which console was better, this is a story I would really love to see told. It all depends on the angle that Rogen and Goldberg will be taking with this. Keep it very Social Network-ish, and they should have a winner on their hands. However, if this is just going to be 90 minutes of Seth Rogen being crapped out by some Japanese overlords after he smokes weed on the job, then we may have a problem.
