Shane Black's PREDATOR won't be a reboot but a sequel instead

Just yesterday we broke news of a new Predator film on the way, and while just about everyone can agree that having Shane Black write and direct the flick is a smart move, the opinion on reboot versus sequel has been rather divided. Well fans of the reboot side of this argument, buckle up. Because the next Predator flick will indeed be a sequel.

Initially, it was believed that Black would be rebooting the franchise. But according to Black, a discussion with co-writer Fred Dekker (via Collider) revealed that it would be a waste to toss away three decades of history. “As far as Fred and I are concerned anyway,” Black said, “why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?”

According to Black, they’d rather look at an “inventive sequel” than redoing the entire franchise as he likes “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.”

And I have to agree with Black. Predator carries a ton of history with it, and rebooting that is lazy and disrespectful to the fans. A sequel that pays homage to that legacy and throws in some new ideas however, sounds perfect.

Hopefully that also means seeing an old face or two return. I’d dig to see Schwarzenegger, Glover and Brody team up to take down a Predator, but that’s a fan-fiction story for another day.

TV.com was reporting that this might be a tv show. Would hate that.

I hated Predators for reasons stated in yesterday’s article. So if they do make a sequel, I would love for them to forget that has ever happened.
But the one problem I had/have with making a Predator sequel is part of what made Predator 1 so bloody amazing was the mystery behind what was hunting Arnie’s troupe of troops.
And how the Predator was revealed in little bits and pieces, and then boom! There it was revealed, and you just nodded your head in agreement when Arnie said that famous line of “One ugly mudderfucker!”

True – the reveal was pretty epic – and that’s why I think the key / or the magic might again be in the hunter / hunt perspective, rather than the “alien with big ass weapons and technology”. Rather focusing on the suspense and inferred danger.

Your argument yesterday was essentially that Predators sucked because Arnie is bigger.

No. My argument was that Arnie and his squad of soldiers got their asses handed to them by ONE Predator, with Arnie barely getting out of there alive. Remember, that Predator was still in awesome shape right before the tree trunk got dropped on its head.
Adrien Brody and his merry band of alleged bad-asses square off not against one Predator, but how many exactly I cannot recall and their Predator poochies.
Do the plausibility math. I find it a very hard pill to swallow (in fact, my body mind and soul rejected it) that Brody and girl could walk out of that situation alive.

If Brody was a better merc, more experienced in ambush warfare and ultimately more seasoned than Arnie’s character, then it is entirely plausible that he could do a better job. You also do not factor in that the first film’s Predator may have just been a vastly superior warrior to the trio in Predators. For all we know they were lazy suburban Predators picking on a lesser peasant Predator. Maybe the other Predators refer to them as ‘those lazy assholes’. You also utterly fail to consider luck as a factor and yet ‘luck’ is exactly how the predators were beaten in 1,2 and Predators.

I’m fine with plausibility maths, but then your sums are too simple, probably because you first hated the film, then came up with reasons why you hate it.

No, I will be honest and say I hated the film and came up with my reasons for hating the film as I have watched it. if they were lazy Suburban Predators then no… you are just trolling right about now, aren’t you?

No, I am making a very valid point. Incredibly little has actually been created around the Predator’s home/culture mythos. The AVP comics did some work there and we catch glimpses of it here and there (like the Predator home world in AVP2 or the group in Predator 2). Considering EVERY culture has layabouts and such, why can’t the predators? So you are assuming a huge amount and using that to slap down a film you simply don’t like. THAT’s trolling.

It’s okay to dislike the film, but if you want to make an argument for that point, at least have some points and not just stuff you pulled out of thin air.

So, by your own argument I should rather just imagine the Predators in Predators to be a bunch of fratboys out to smoke some Predaweed and shag some earth girls? And indulge in some hunting and killing too, just to appease the Predator profs from Predator U? Was there any indication made in the movie that this was the case? A flashback of some sort to their lives as care free students, or as in your example, a flashback to their lives as suburban hausfraus too lazy to mow the lawn?
Please. Why would I then take Predators seriously as a movie, as that was kind of what that movie expected of me? Then this would also prove my argument that compared to Arnie, Adrien was not as bad a bad-ass as he wanted me to believe, what with all his scowling.
Unless of course, the real title of the movie was Predators: A Parody?
And, look, I am a geek myself. But Predators was released as a stand alone movie, meant (as far as I am concerned) to be seen in context of the rest of the Predator movies. So dragging the comics into this is kind of desperate, in trying to convince me that my arguments are invalid.

Dude, if I don’t drag in the comics I can beat your argument even more easily. I was giving you a gap.

And, no, I’m not saying you should accept my argument. I’m saying your argument is ill-conceived and more about emotion than fact. I was highlighting potential elements around the Predator movies that you are clearly disregarding because they would derail your points. So all this stuff about plausibility mathematics and such are just bullshit.

You are not a fan, just an angry person hiding the fact that you cannot get over your own nostalgia.

I do though agree with one of your points: you can’t really reinvent the mystery of the first Predator movie. But the same can be said for Alien. Aliens was a very different film than its predecessor.

I think with Shane Black on board it should be fine. I agree with a sequel over a reboot as well. I remember watching Predator and The Secret of My Success on the same day during a holiday when I was in Std 6 and also posting an epic score on Afterburner the same day. One of the greatest days of my life 🙂

This doesn’t really change anything. Predators was written by Rodriguez as a potential sequel to Predator and it worked well-enough. If Predators wasn’t the magic this franchise needed, it’s hard to see how trying it AGAIN will be different, because Predators is still the closest the franchise has gotten to a Predator sequel. They should have stuck to that for at least one more film before going back to the drawing board. What if Predators 2 was the Dark Knight of the franchise?

Interesting, though, that we all assume this new project is a sequel to Predator and not the other films. The quote above doesn’t clarify that at all. And practically everything after Predator has been an attempt at following that film, even AVP 2. So sequel or reboot makes no difference. The problem is that we’ve been here before several times.
