If you ask me the art of making good, heart pounding, blood chilling horror movies is dying out. The movies coming out the last few years have been more gore and gross than horrifying – and I guess that is kind of scary for some people.

However every now and then a movie comes along that promises to leave me with nightmares and checking over my shoulder when I park my car in our very dark driveway and it actually delivers. Director Robert Eggers seems to have made one such movie in The Witch.

The plot goes as follows:

In the 17th century, a Puritan family lives alone on the edge of a New England wilderness. Soon after their infant son disappears, their daughter is suspected of witchcraft, and the family begins to break down in the face of an unknown evil.

The movie was screened at last year’s Sundance Film Festival where Eggers walked away with the award for Best Director, and for good reason it would seem if the haunting trailer is anything to go by. Which you can check out for yourself below:

Now that trailer alone sent chills down my spine! It looks like after a long wait we will get a horror movie that will not only haunt our minds but our eyeballs as well – and I for one am looking really forward to the terrifying experience.

Starring in The Witch is Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw, Ellie Grainger, Lucas Dawson, Julian Richings and Bathsheba Garnett as The Witch. It’s scheduled to hit theaters on February 19, 2016.
