If there are two films that you have to see before you die, add Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz to that bucket list. They’re a duo of films that run like 90 minute glorious homages to cult classic genres, such as horror and buddy-cops, and they’ve been instrumental in helping cement the careers of director Edgar Wright and actors Nick Frost and Simon Pegg.
And they’re turning that duo of films into a trilogy of spiritual sequels, with The World’s End, which they recently described as a sci-fi comedy.
Speaking to Empire, Wright and Pegg hinted that the film may be playing up an alien invasion angle, all centered around a group of friends embarking on an epic pub crawl to recapture their youth, according to the following synopsis:
20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again.
They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End.
As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.
Carrying on with the interview, Pegg confirmed that the pub crawl wuld be laid out over twelve such establishments, with The World’s End serving as the final challenge.
“This is as much about where you grew up as the people you grew up with. It’s also very silly. I would say it’s darker, more personal and more silly”.
And when asked for further details on the film genre. Wright kept mum, revealing only that;
[It’s] Hard to say…It’s a sci-fi comedy. Social science-fiction. Look it up on Wikipedia and then bone up on John Christopher and John Wyndham.
An alien invasion, centered around a booze cruise of Herculean proportions? Sounds fantastic to me. The World’s End starts shooting later this year, for a 2013 release.
