The new Star Trek movies are fun. JJ Abrams took the project because he felt more could be done with the concept and he was right. Even the sequel, which I had serious misgivings about, was excellent – even better than the first.

So I have faith in the third movie, but it does seem to be going through troubled waters. Roberto Orci, who co-wrote the first two movies, was at first going to direct it. But he stepped away from the director’s chair, remaining instead as a producer. Justin Lin, director of several Fast & Furious films, is now in charge. It’s not clear if this means the Enterprise will be dragging a bank vault behind it, but there will be plenty of time to make crossover jokes.

Good news for fans is that Simon Pegg, who also plays Scotty in the new movies, is co-writing the new script with Doug Jung. Pegg needs no introduction. Jung in turn got the gig because he impressed Abrams’ Bad Robot with a script for a movie called Diamond. So at least something is happening. But this also means two things: 1. there is no real script for Star Trek 3 yet, and 2. there may be confusion about what to do with film number three.

Let’s face it: this time they really need to go boldly explore stuff. But how to make that a blockbuster movie and not something resembling a TV episode? Just look at what happened with the particularly dull Star Trek: Insurrection. The current franchise has also pretty much dealt with Kirk’s father issues, Spock’s mother issues and their eternal bromance. Perhaps it is time for other character to step up, but then we’d forget that practically every original and successful Star Trek movie was about Kirk and Spock. The good Next Generation films also focused on the Enterprise captains or a localised threat – not deep space exploration.

It’s starting to look like the franchise is between a rock and a hard place. Will Pegg and Jung find a way out for it?
