So is Lee Pace going to collect or control THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY?

Yesterday we brought you the story that The Hobbit and Pushing Daisies star Lee Pace would be teaming up with his eyebrows to play the villain in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. A villain known as The Collector, to be exact. That’s what was being reported everywhere.

Except, that might be kind of wrong.

A few days ago, a story popped up on THR stating that British actress Ophelia Lovibond (Mr. Popper‘s Penguins, No Strings Attached) was joining the cast of the James Gunn directed sci-fi/superhero flick. And according to the report, the identity of her role was “being kept in the farther reaches of deep space, home of Marvel’s security bunker.” And yet, soon thereafter, when other news sites began reporting on this, a few of them stated that she would possibly play Carina, aide and daughter to The Collector, one of the Elders of the Universe, a group of immortal and virtually omnipotent beings in the Marvel universe. So yeah, definite supervillain material.

Except that I can’t find a single trace of where this initial assertion of Lovibond’s role being that of Carina, and thus by inference that The Collector is involved, is coming from. A few sites explicitly state that that’s what THR is reporting, but the original article makes absolutely no such mention.

Now as we mentioned in our article, The Collector had his run-ins with Thanos, the purple faced star of The Avengers’ after credit scene and proposed big bad for The Avengers 2, and who’s been strongly rumoured will play a part in Guardians, so it’s possible that he is involved.  But here’s the thing, on a pure power scale, as badass as Thanos is, the Elders of the Universe are badass-er. So it simply doesn’t make sense to let one of the movies building up to The Avengers 2 have a more powerful villain.

So who is Pace playing then?

Latino Review think they know. While they don’t mention Pace, they claim to have it “on good authority” that the film’s actual villain will be Basil Sandhurst aka The Controller (the similar sounding names is probably where the confusion came from), who is, in my opinion, a far better choice for Guardians.

An incredible chemist and engineer who created and bonded himself to an advanced exoskeleton, The Controller has highly enhanced strength, endurance and just about every mental ability there is, from telekinesis to telepathy. As the name implies though, it’s his mind control abilities, amplified through the use of his “slave discs” that makes him such a formidable force. Most importantly though, The Controller is actually Thanos’ main henchman.

It makes sense then to have him in Guardians’ main antagonist role, while Thanos does his “in the shadows puppet master” gig, much like he did with Loki in The Avengers. Plus, I think that it’s a role that Pace is much better suited for. You may recall that Pace was originally also up for the role of Star Lord, but Marvel eventually settled on Chris Pratt for the part. As somebody who was impressed with him back in Pushing Daisies, I was a little disappointed that he he didn’t get the lead role that would surely catapult him up the Hollywood ranks, but this may just be slightly better. I mean, everybody loves the bad guy, right?

Guardians of the Galaxy will be collecting our ticket money and controlling our eyeballs on August 1, 2014.
